Tom Cruise has been recognized not just for his acting career, but also for helping to advocate for theatrical moviegoing and for practical filmmaking. Dolly Parton is already a legendary music and philanthropic icon and the Academy will recognize her for her contributions to film as well as bringing powerful stories and songs to the big screen.

Debbie Allen's award honors her decades of talent as a performer, director, and arts advocate, paving the way for women and people of color in the entertainment fields.

Wynn Thomas, one of Hollywood's most accomplished production designers, is being acknowledged as a trailblazer in his craft and also for his visual storytelling for important films such as Malcolm X and Hidden Figures.

The Academy has spoken, and each recipient has used their talents to not only entertain but to also impact the industry and model for future generations of artists and filmmakers.

The Awards was created to focus on individuals whose accomplishments do not reside within the competitive categories of the Oscars but deserve long, lasting recognition. The honorees this year encompasses and represents a wide and diverse range of impact within the film world.

Tom Cruise is receiving recognition for his continued dedication to the film industry, and more so for being the person who rebooted the box office after the pandemic. With Top Gun: Maverick, Cruise brought audiences back to theatres and highlighted the importance and impact of stories meant to be told on the big screen.

The award Dolly Parton received focused on work outside of music. Not just her acting in films like 9 to 5 and Steel Magnolias, or for her prolific songwriting, or for her advocacy for the arts. Dolly Parton mattered to the heart of Hollywood and to the heart of popular culture.

Debbie Allen is known for many things: her long career as an actress in Fame, her directing on huge shows like Grey's Anatomy, and for her advocacy for arts education. She has opened doors for many young people, especially young people of color.

Wynn Thomas' legacy as the first African American production designer of stature, is honored for his artistic contributions to films which examine the important social and historical issues. His designs have contributed and defined the conceptual landscape of some of cinema's most impactful works.

These two honors represent much more than professional accomplishments. They affirm together, a shared investment in storytelling, an inclusion of a more diverse voice and approach as the film industry continues to evolve.
