Veteran actor Michael Madsen, known for his tough-guy roles in classic films like Reservoir Dogs and Kill Bill, has died at the age of 67. He passed away on July 3, 2025, at his home in Malibu, California, after suffering a suspected cardiac arrest. Authorities confirmed that there was no sign of foul play.
Madsen’s sudden death has left fans and the film industry in shock. He had been active in the entertainment world for over four decades and had worked on more than 300 film and TV projects throughout his career.
Known for his deep voice and intense screen presence, Madsen became a cult favorite thanks to his role as Mr. Blonde in Quentin Tarantino’s 1992 film Reservoir Dogs. His unforgettable performance in the infamous ear-cutting scene made him a standout figure in the world of independent cinema. He later teamed up with Tarantino again for Kill Bill, The Hateful Eight, and Once Upon a Time in… Hollywood.
Aside from working with Tarantino, Madsen also appeared in notable films such as Donnie Brasco, Sin City, and Thelma & Louise. He was often cast as the gruff, intense antihero or villain—a role he played with effortless charm.
Even in his final years, Madsen remained active. Reports say he was involved in over a dozen independent film projects that were still in production or post-production at the time of his death.
More Than a Hollywood Tough Guy: Struggles, Family, and Poetry
Michael Madsen’s life off-screen was just as complex and layered as his characters. While he was known for playing hard-edged roles, those close to him described him as sensitive, thoughtful, and deeply creative. His sister, actress Virginia Madsen, once called him “a poet disguised as an outlaw.”
In fact, poetry was a major part of his personal life. Madsen wrote several poetry collections during his career, often focusing on themes like love, loss, and fatherhood. Just before his passing, he was preparing to release a new book of poems titled Tears for My Father: Outlaw Thoughts and Poems, which included a foreword by Tarantino himself.
However, Madsen also faced serious challenges in his personal life. In 2022, he lost his son Hudson to suicide—a tragedy that reportedly had a lasting impact on him. In recent months, he was dealing with legal troubles and financial stress. According to sources, Madsen had recently been evicted from his home and had planned to enter a rehabilitation facility just before his death.
Despite past bankruptcy filings and other money issues, his net worth was still estimated between $500,000 and $2 million, depending on various reports. He earned this through acting, poetry, voice work, and small business ventures.
Madsen is survived by his six children, his sister Virginia, and longtime friend and business manager Perry Wander. Those close to him say he was “finally at peace” after a life filled with both artistic highs and personal hardship.
