Sara Burack, known for her role on Netflix’s Million Dollar Beach House, died after being hit by a car in a hit-and-run early Wednesday morning June 19.
The crash happened at approximately 2:30 a.m. on Montauk Highway in Hampton Bays, police said. Emergency personnel transported Burack to Stony Brook University Hospital, where she later died from her injuries.
Burack was 40 years old and worked as a luxury real estate agent, splitting time between New York City and the Hamptons. She gained prominence in the public eye through the Netflix series about a group of young agents selling luxury estate properties in the area.
As friends and fans began mourning the loss of someone everyone described as warm, engaged and generous, the hit-and-run attracted immediate concern in already tight real estate and entertainment networks.
Suspect arrested in Virginia, faces felony charges
The day after the crash and arrest of the suspect, police arrested a suspect named Amanda Kempton, 32, of Great Falls, Virginia, who was charged with leaving the scene of a fatal crash, a felony in New York state.
According to authorities, Kempton was located following an investigation, spearheaded by the Southampton Town Police, in conjunction with the New York State Police; a crash reconstruction unit. Authorities would not release details of the vehicle or how the suspect was located.
Kempton was taken into custody and held overnight in jail. On Saturday, June 21, she appeared before the Southampton Town Justice Court for her arraignment. If convicted, she could face up to four years in prison.
The circumstances surrounding the deadly crash are still under thorough investigation, as detectives work to determine if factors like speeding, intoxication, or other elements played a role.
Police are asking that anyone with any knowledge about the incident step forward to assist in the ongoing investigation.
The news of Burack's premature departure has left her professional circle and personal friends heartbroken. Many remarked on how she was emerging as a star in real estate, with a natural ability to connect with people and close deals.
Before her career in real estate, Burack worked in her family’s building materials business before making the leap into luxury home sales. She made a name for herself with her professionalism, style, and ambition.
As a community member outside of work, Burack was involved with many charities, including the ASPCA and the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. She was known for her enthusiasm for community service and compassion for people in need.
At this time, no arrangements for the funeral have been disclosed. However, it is expected one will occur in the coming days, where friends, family, and colleagues will gather to honor her life.
The investigation into the fatal hit-and-run is ongoing. Police continue to collect evidence and interview witnesses. Further information should develop in the coming days.
