Comedian reveals intimate details about their partnership and family life
Andy Samberg, the former Saturday Night Live and Brooklyn Nine-Nine star, has given fans a rare glimpse into his private life. He sat down with Amy Poehler for a new podcast where he opened up about his marriage to musician and actress Joanna Newsom.
During the interview on Poehler's Good Hang podcast, Samberg discussed how he and Newsom have built a very strong partnership over the years, and it's still fun and exciting for him. Although they are famously private people, Samberg managed to share some cheeky and tender reflections on what it's like to be in partnership with someone he admires greatly.
He characterized their marriage as "really fun" and told Poehler that even now, years after saying "I do," being together with Newsom still feels special. "'Cause it still feels like we're getting away with something," he said as he expressed how much he enjoys their time together - which, in family life, is not always easy.
A Quiet Relationship with Mutual Respect
Joanna Newsom is a singer-songwriter and harpist who has a pretty unique aesthetic. She met Samberg in 2006 following one of her concerts, where they were introduced by comedienne Fred Armisen. After being together for several years, Samberg and Newsom tied the knot in September 2013, with their wedding taking place in Big Sur, California.
Though they have largely kept their relationship under wraps since, and don’t often get out to events or mention one another in interviews, their closest friends maintain they are a couple that heavily respects one another’s talents.
Amy Poehler recounted watching their relationship form early on during the podcast and said she had a “good feeling” about it from the start. Samberg added from the moment he met Joanna, he was “gone,” implying attraction from the very start.
Even though their occupations keep them busy—Samberg with acting and comedy, and Newsom with music and odd acting gigs—they intentionally show support to one another’s work. Samberg stressed that they are not just fans of the other’s art, but respect each other’s craft; that is, the labor, the dedication, the struggle and pain that go into it.
They currently reside in Los Angeles with their two children. Their first child was birthed in 2017, and while the date of birth of their second child has never been confirmed publicly, we know they had a second child sometime before 2023.
Parenting and Privacy Away from the Limelight
Being public figures, Samberg and Newsom have been able to raise their family mostly out of the limelight. They made the choice to keep their children's lives private by sharing only limited information in interviews or their lives on social media.
That said, he did share a couple nice memories during the podcast. He discussed the joys of parenting, and how being a dad has changed him. He also called it "the best thing that has ever happened," despite sleepless nights and the craziness of parenting young children.
He told the stories about when he would make his daughter laugh with silly sounds or when he and his daughter danced around the kitchen as being some of the best moments of the day. Hearing these stories gave the audience a unique and rare experience of hearing a snippet of his home life, complete with laughter, love, and familial connection.
The couple resides part-time in their historic home in Los Angeles and at their property in the West Village of New York. They are very private and it seems they have done their best to stay low-profile while living their lives and creating a family.
Samberg does not run into fans that often, but lately he has made statements that reminded us all how much he appreciates the life he and Joanna have created together. Their relationship is a touchstone of how celebrities can live healthy and happy lives in their personal life - even with all of the important attention.
