There’s nothing like the feeling of taking a sequel to one of the biggest action blockbusters in the country. That’s why it seems to be weighing on Ayan Mukerji. In a recent conversation with the filmmaker, he shared what it is like to take on War 2, the highly sought-after sequel to the 2019 Yash Raj Films' blockbuster, War, which previously starred Hrithik Roshan. Ayan is at it again, and not only does he have Hrithik Roshan, but also the Telugu superstar Jr NTR, in one film to create an all-out explosive action flick.
For Ayan Mukerji, mostly known for his more emotional or fantasical cinema, such as Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani and Brahmāstra, War 2 provides a space of uncharted territory.
But it's a challenge he isn't shying away from. Ayan has already been helped by this film being a grand opportunity and a big responsibility. Ayan acknowledged it similarly being of a film like War 2 is a great opportunity but at the same time is a huge responsibility. The War franchise is not just a movie on its own, it falls under the YRF Spy Universe brand, following blockbusters like Pathaan and Tiger 3. The expectations aren't just high, they're through the roof. He admits the audience have a strong sense of connectivity to these stories and characters and he doesn't want to disappoint them. In fact he said, the aim is to take everything people liked in War to then to order of 10, so bigger action, bigger drama and bigger emotional stakes.
What’s interesting is how Ayan intends to have his own flair in the film while still retaining its War qualities. He suggested that he is trying to strike a balance between spectacle vs story, so, it is not only car chases and slow motion punches, but, there are some real character moments that the audience can invest in. That’s very Ayan – he has always been a storyteller who wants to embed his spectacle in emotional foundations. And with Hrithik and Jr NTR being two fiery, emotional actors that counts for an action film that is going to pack a wallop both physically and emotionally.
Ayan also praised Hrithik and Jr NTR for their dedication and energy, calling them both “super inspiring” to work with. He said they bring a level of intensity that pushes everyone around them to raise the bar. Though the shooting timeline and plot details are still under wraps, fans can expect high-octane visuals, sleek stunts, and, hopefully, the kind of cinematic experience that redefines Indian action movies. With War 2, Mukerji isn’t just making a sequel—he’s trying to create something that earns its place in the Spy Universe and sets new benchmarks for Bollywood blockbusters.
