Baaghi 4, which stars Tiger Shroff, Sanjay Dutt, Sonam Bajwa, and Harnaaz Sandhu in her Bollywood debut, released on September 5, 2023, across India. Directed by A. Harsha, the film generated decent levels of anticipation. However, while the film had a positive buzz, its day one opening number was underwhelming.

Opening Day Box-Office Performance

On the first day of release, Baaghi 4 grossed an estimated ₹12 crore nett, as per the box office tracking service, Sacnilk. This was on the higher end of what was expected, although a little above that of the original Baaghi (₹11.85 crore), but much lower than Baaghi 2 (₹25.1 crore) and Baaghi 3 (₹17.5 crore), but not an overwhelmingly large day 1 number considering the history of the franchise.

Baaghi 4 had approximately 4,000 shows on Day 1 with key markets including Delhi–NCR with 943 shows, and Mumbai with 717 shows.

The overall occupancy was 28.3%, with low morning and afternoon occupancy rates (~22%) growing to a decent number as the evening and night came (~37%).

Advance Booking & Pre-Release Hype

The film saw excellent advance booking traction prior to its release, with estimates of ticket sales in the range of ₹5 crore to ₹7 crore in Day 1 of advance ticket sales.

In the first 48 hours, there were over 1 lakh tickets sold, which was an improvement over franchises such as Kesari Chapter 2 and Jaat. Hopes were building that the film would achieve an opening-day collection of more than ₹20 crore.

Piracy Cloud Overshadows Launch

Within hours of the release of Baaghi 4 on September 5, piracy took a substantial hit as it began to surface on torrent sites in a variety of resolutions. Analysts warn that in addition to impacting box office totals, it potentially puts unauthorized viewers at risk of litigation.

Competition on Release Day

The action drama released into theatres together with other key titles – especially Madharaasi and The Conjuring: Last Rites.

  • The Conjuring: Last Rites came out on top; it earned ₹18 crore on the same opening day in India.
  • Madharaasi, starring Sivakarthikeyan, narrowly surpassed Baaghi 4 with an opening of ₹13 crore.

The strong competition releases likely played a role in Baaghi 4's box-office performance.

What lies ahead for Baaghi 4

While Baaghi 4 was less successful than the prior entries in the franchise, its opening was not a weak opening in absolute terms. How it continues after this weekend, how it receives critic reviews, and how word-of-mouth will determine this film's performance, after being impacted by piracy, and competition.
