The character Bagpuss was beloved by many, and was previously described as “the most magical saggy old cloth cat in the whole wide world.” For this very reason, Bagpuss wil be appearing on the big screen yet again, and we can only expect the most magical of results!
New developments indicate that Threewise Entertainment will be releasing a blend of live action and animation Bagpuss film in the year of 2027, and they will be fully supported in this endeavor by the family of the original creators, Oliver Postgate and Peter Firmin, in a collaborative effort to pay homage to the original show that was released in the year of 1974.
From 1974 TV Show to 2027 Feature Film
The original Bagpuss series first aired in February 1974 on the BBC and only ran for 13 episodes. Despite its short run, it became one of Britain’s most cherished children’s programs, later voted the nation’s favourite children’s TV show in a 1999 BBC poll.
The upcoming feature promises to modernize the tale while remaining true to the roots of the original. Fans can rest assured that Bagpuss will still be accompanied by his friends as they continue to mend broken objects and provide a helping hand, though this time the beloved Victorianisti backdrop will be set in contemporary Britain.

A Personal Legacy for the Creators’ Families
Emily Firmin, the daughter of co-creator Peter Firmin and the original on-screen Emily in the 1970s show, welcomed the project warmly. She said Bagpuss was more than just a character—it was a friend who inspired children to care, imagine, and be kind.
The support of the son of Oliver Postgate deceased in June 2025, Daniel Postgate, was also given to the project. He was reluctant to support CGI adaptations because they lost the magic, which, for him, was a part of the original, but, for this project, especially film, was a well-structured enough idea to invite his support.
Why Bagpuss Still Matters
Bagpuss has a special place in British culture. Even though it aired half a century ago, its themes of friendship, creativity, and kindness remain timeless.
The singing soothing music together with the hand-made craft animation continues to attract both the young and the elderly because of the unique character of the Professor Yaffle the woodpecker and the mice which play the mouse organ.
The anticipation of the revival is that it will enable new children to be introduced to Bagpuss whilst also helping the parents and grandparents experience nostalgia from their childhood.
