Chris Janson, a country music star, recently shared a scary moment that happened while he and his family were fishing. Janson's 11-year-old son Jesse Bo suffered a painful injury when a catfish stuck him during their fishing trip. Jesse was stuck with three sharp spines, which Janson called a “parent’s nightmare.”
The artist told the story on his Instagram, detailing how the injury happened and what the family did about it. Janson, whose hits include "Buy Me a Boat," commonly takes his family on outdoor excursions and is front and center when fishing is involved. However, this trip was particularly unusual because Jesse was, in Janson's words, "triple-stuck," after getting puncture wounds from the catfish's spines in three separate areas.
Catfish Spines Can Cause Severe Pain and Swelling
Catfish are known to have venomous sharp spines on their fins, which can cause serious pain penetrating the skin. In the case of Jesse, the injury was more extreme than normal - because all three spines went into his skin at once. According to Janson, the pain was severe and things were quickly becoming serious.
Janson described Jesse as an experienced fisherman, who has caught catfish many times in his fishing career, but this was an unfortunate accident that he described as rare. The family was in a hurry and dealt with the injury carefully the best they could. The family removed the spines and then Jesse began antibiotics to prevent an infection. Fortunately, Jesse is on a good path to recovery now.
While the injury hurt, Jesse was strong. Janson posted a photo of him holding the spines that the doctors removed. You could clearly see that the young boy took the whole thing in stride. The family received an overwhelming amount of support from fans and followers online, with many posting their own injuries they'd gotten while fishing and wishing Jesse well in his recovery.
Family Time Turns Scary, But Ends on a Positive Note
The incident occurred just a few days before Janson and his wife Kelly's 15th wedding anniversary on July 4. Regardless of the scare, the family remained optimistic and thankful that the injury was not worse. In his post, Janson noted that there is no feeling more difficult for a parent to cope with than that of seeing their child in pain.
The country singer also took the time to thank his fan base for their messages and support. Many said Jesse was tough and being a "brave kid" for "handling a painful experience".
This instance of real life adversity has jumped out at a particularly fitting time and can be seen as Janson gets ready for a hectic season ahead with his summer tour and new album Wild Horses, which drops on August 1, 2025.
While Janson is used to sharing pieces of his life, this one connected with plenty of parents and fans that truly know how difficult parenting can be, and how quickly life can spiral in the wrong direction. It was a good reminder that even when you are in the middle of a fun family activity, things can go off the rails in an instant, but can hopefully also be put back on the rails with some quick thinking, calm in the moment awareness, and family support.
