Christopher Rodriguez-Marquette has officially been cast in the role of the local police officer Jacob Merrick in Reacher Season 4, taken over from Jay Baruchel. The change of cast was unexpected, as other than news that Baruchel was stepping away from the series due to personal reasons; there was no confirmation that Rodriguez-Marquette would take over the role. Fortunately, there appears to be no delays to production for the new season of the Amazon Prime Video series, which began in mid-June 2025.
Rodriguez-Marquette, known for his work on HBO's Barry, as well as various television and film credits will now move into the character Merrick in what is deemed as most important character in season 4 of the series, which is based on author Lee Child's 2009 book Gone Tomorrow. In this book, Merrick assists Jack Reacher through a dangerous web of events, all stemming from a lady's suspicious death in a subway station in New York City.
Casting change swiftly handled as production moves forward
Casting transitions happen so quickly that Rodriguez-Marquette, apparently, basically started with the production department in their first rehearsal, as Baruchel had not been out of the picture for more than a few weeks. Rushed casting changes are uncommon, especially for a key role, and do not delay a scheduled filming week.
Jay Baruchel was previously announced as the actor for this role at the beginning of the year, only for inevitably exiting the production after a few weeks. The reasoning was not disclosed, but stated to be personal. Amazon and the producers of the show acted quickly to add Rodriguez-Marquette, who has a long list of acting experience, including playing different types of complex characters.
Jacob Merrick goes beyond a peripheral character. He provides a vital role in Reacher's investigation as both a tangible resource and emotional support as the ex-MP investigates what could be a terror plot. Merrick's character helps to ground the season's breakneck-paced narrative in human relationships and will enrich the action sequences.

Rodriguez-Marquette's casting is likely to add dimension to the character. While Rodriguez-Marquette's performance is certain to be different than Baruchel's possible screen portrayal, fans are curious to see how Rodriguez-Marquette interprets the character. He is capable of being intense and vulnerable in his previous work, qualities that could be beneficial to Merrick in next season's role.
What to expect from Season 4
Season 4 of Reacher will adapt Gone Tomorrow, which is the 13th book in the bestselling series by Lee Child. In the book, Reacher witnesses what looks like a suicide on a subway platform in New York City. As he begins to investigate, he starts to be drawn into a vast conspiracy involving government secrets, a military cover-up and a very real threat to public safety.
The series will continue to include its trademark combination of suspense, mystery and tension, led by Alan Ritchson in the lead role. The new cast will also feature Rodriguez-Marquette alongside Ritchson in one of the most important roles of the season.
The season is still in production and has no release date yet, but it is likely to be released in 2026. The gritty tone and storytelling that fans experienced in previous seasons of Reacher will likely be back for this installment.
Recasting such a prominent role will always raise a few eyebrows, however, the reactions are already suggesting Rodriguez-Marquette is a solid six-level play. His addition to the season presumably demonstrates an easy transition and continuity for the series moving into its fourth chapter.
