Coolie Box Office Day 5: Rajinikanth Closes in on ₹200 Cr

Rajinikanth's latest release, Coolie, is shaping up to be a theatrical heavyweight in 2025. Released on August 14, the film has only completed its five-day run in theaters, but it is already approaching the ₹200 crore mark in India. While the collection on Monday fell significantly, the action-entertainer is still attracting crowds to the cinema, indicating that Rajinikanth's box office reign is strong.

Coolie grossed an estimated ₹196.55 crore net in India by the end of Day 5, an increase from ₹193.25 crore over a four-day period. In general terms, the film has maintained strong showings, even accounting for the usual Monday post-weekend slowdown. Early reports on Monday estimated about ₹3.62 crore net grossed over all languages in India.

Box office watchers also reported downward movement in occupancy after the heavy crowds over the weekend.

Tamil shows fell to about 23.5% from previously over 45%.
Hindi shows fell to only 6.3% on Monday.

While the downward trend in collections week-after-week performances is to be expected after a festive weekend, with large value collections and mass-market appeal the numbers still show that Coolie is currently popular amongst theatre-goers. If it continues with its below-par weekday collections into the rest of next couple of days, it should achieve crossing the ₹200-crore mark fairly soon!

Clash with War 2: Coolie Maintains an Edge

After being released with strong competition due to Hrithik Roshan and Jr. NTR’s War 2 also hitting theatres over the Independence Day weekend, Coolie had a strong opening weekend but edged ahead of War 2 in overall collections in India as the days went on.

As of now, Coolie leads War 2 at the box office. Analysts have pointed out that War 2 saw the benefit of it being a holiday weekend, and it has since slowed down significantly from the Monday after release. Whereas, Coolie has had a much steadier hold thanks to it appealing to Tamil speaking audiences and otherwise.

The big question now is if Coolie can continue to hold over the weekdays or continue to stay ahead of War 2. Industry experts believe because of Rajinikanth’s huge following and good word of mouth, Coolie is well on its way to being one of the biggest blockbusters of 2023.

With a little under ₹4 crore left to reach ₹200 crore, the next few days will be crucial. If it can maintain even mediocre traction, it is poised for an even larger run going into week two.
