CD Projekt Red has confirmed that Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is returning for a new season. The announcement came during Anime Expo 2025 in Los Angeles, where the creators of Edgerunners announced that production of the next season is well underway. The anime series based on the popular Cyberpunk 2077 video game first debuted on Netflix in 2022 and quickly became a hit for its compelling story and distinctive animation style.

Unlike the season one storyline focused on David Martinez and Lucy, season 2 will introduce a completely different cast and story. According to the creators, the new season will incorporate elements of revenge and redemption while staying true to the unique world in which the story takes place, Night City.

New Season Will Present New Story and New Crew

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners season 2 will have a new story to tell which means it can be seen as a new stand-alone story rather than a direct sequel to the last. This allows viewers to go into season 2 without watching season 1 because the series won't require you to see not of the original story. For example, there will be new story elements like characters and plots and there will be some familiar things in terms of visuals and aesthetics for example and the city of Night City from the first season.

Kai Ikarashi who was the director for episode 6 of the previous season will be the head director for season 2. This will be his first lead of a full series, and the production group believes this will make a new essence on the new series with his creative direction. The remaining group will have some familiar faces that will include show runner Bartosz Sztybor and screenwriter Masahiko Otsuka and illustrated Kanno Ichigo who were all part of the first season development.

Sztybor shared at the Anime Expo panel that the new season will be darker. He stated that I want to create something darker and more emotional than the original season and wanted to reach a tone that affects people more heavily than the first season because, as he shared, "I just wanted to make the whole world sad". Sztybor also implied that the new plotline would be heavier and possibly more tragic.

Studio TRIGGER is doing the animation again for the new season, the Japanese animation studio behind the original season. In addition, Studio TRIGGER is also known for their energetic and fast moving animated style which helped to propel the success of their original season.

No Netflix Release Date, But Production's Started

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Season 2 has lots of buzz since it's announcement, but there is no confirmed date. It's still in production and Netflix has yet to announce when it will start streaming.

A teaser poster and the official logo were revealed at the Anime Expo event, but there has not been a trailer released yet. The team has indicated more updates are coming in the near future as production continues.

While the new season will not follow the same characters, many series fans are excited to be back in the world of Night City. The first season was acclaimed for its emotional nature, extreme and fast-paced action, and high-quality animation, and expectations are high for what's next.

  • This new season will feature a brand new cast and a standalone story.
