David Corenswet, the new star of James Gunn's upcoming Superman film, discussed how talking with previous actors in the role helped him feel prepared for the iconic character. Corenswet, who will portray Clark Kent in the 2025 film, said that he reached out to Henry Cavill and Tyler Hoechlin before the filming started.
Corenswet said that the messages he received weren't really good acting tips, but instead encouragement, that Cavill and Hoechlin said to enjoy it and be proud of what the character represents. These simple words meant so much to Corenswet. He said the conversations were different in a respectful way and made him feel like he was welcomed into a small, but meaningful club of actors who have played Superman.
James Gunn’s Superman is scheduled for release on July 11, 2025, and will introduce a new era for the DC Universe as part of the Gods and Monsters chapter of the reimagined DC Studios plan. It will be the first movie to feature a new Clark Kent form, and will bring elements of nostalgia into a modern rendition.
Corenswet will star alongside Rachel Brosnahan playing Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult playing villain Lex Luthor, and other heroes such as Green Lantern (Nathan Fillion), Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced), and Mister Terrific (Edi Gathegi).
Corenswet mentioned that it was an emotional moment to wear the Superman suit for the first time. He talked about feeling proud and excited as a result of the crew's reaction to him in costume. In considering the weight of the responsibility the role carries, he said the support he's received has made it easier to have center stage as Superman.
James Gunn, who is directing and co-writing the film, has indicated that this version of Superman will have more emphasis on the character's values and inner strength and not just super powers in relation to who he is as a man. The film will delve into the idea of what it means to be a hero in a complicated world, while still including plenty of action for Superman fans.
