Debra Messing Faces Backlash Over NYC Mayoral Meme, Wins Israel Advocacy Award

Debra Messing, well known for her performance in Will & Grace, is currently under fire for her Instagram Story about the election for the mayor of New York City that referred to candidate Zohran Mamdani with the term "jihadist." The actress shared a meme that stated Mamdani was a "jihadist" on her Instagram Story and social media was not pleased with her post.

Messing, a strong supporter of former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, had previously made close to 100 posts attacking Mamdani, who is publicly Muslim and liberal. The meme was from an account called The Persian Jewess and made a crude comparison between "A Democrat Just a Democrat" and "An Actual Communist Jihadist." Many people who saw the posts accused Messing of being offensive and bigoted because of the polarized viewpoint she portrayed.

Many were critical of Messing's caustic language in her posts, but some also wrote questions about the nature and intensity of Messing's online campaign. Some even questioned her mental health because of the intensity and amount of activity that occurred that day. Messing has not yet further publicly addressed the social media backlash.

In addition to the controversy, Debra Messing is earning good will for her vociferous advocacy on behalf of Israel. In early November 2025, Messing traveled to Tel Aviv to accept an award honoring her advocacy work at the International LGBTQ+ Film Festival at the Tel Aviv Cinematheque.

As Messing describes her support of Israel, "it is the single most important thing I have done in my life," emphasizing her engagement since the October 7 attacks perpetrated by Hamas. Messing has been outspoken in Hollywood about combating antisemitism and supporting the rights of Israelis in the context of the ongoing war. As a part of her advocacy efforts, she is producing a documentary titled October 8, which reviews the escalation of antisemitism across the globe.
