Dilbert Creator Scott Adams Shares Grim Cancer Diagnosis
Wow. Just heard the news about Scott Adams, the guy behind Dilbert. It's pretty heavy.
A Somber Update
On Monday, May 19th, 2025, Adams dropped a bombshell on his YouTube show, "Real Coffee with Scott Adams." He announced he has aggressive prostate cancer, the same type as former President Joe Biden. But unlike Biden's situation, which apparently is manageable, Adams' prognosis is...well, it's not good. He's expecting to die sometime this summer. This summer. That's just heartbreaking.
Facing the Inevitable
Adams, who's 67, didn't sugarcoat it. He talked about the intense, constant pain, the walker he's been using for months, the lack of good days, and how nights are even worse. He described it all as “intolerable.” He even said "I'm always in pain," which just chills me to the bone. I can only imagine.
He mentioned that while he has moments of mobility, most days are a struggle. The pain shifts around his body. It’s awful to even think about.
- Constant, intense pain
- Reliance on a walker
- No "good days"
Yet, somehow, knowing he doesn't have much time left seems to give him a strange sense of peace. He feels like he has enough time to say goodbye to loved ones and get his affairs in order. He even called it "civilized," which is...unexpected, given the circumstances.
The Dilbert Fallout
This news comes on the heels of a very different kind of controversy. Remember all the fuss a couple of years back? Adams made some incredibly insensitive and racist comments on his YouTube channel. Major newspapers dropped Dilbert as a result. It was a huge blow to his career and income, and it really seemed to impact him.
So this diagnosis? It's a lot. A huge amount to process. It's sad. But I guess knowing how much he's been through, in terms of his career and now his health, makes this news even more poignant.
What Now?
It's a tough situation. The guy is facing his mortality, and he's doing it publicly. Whether you agree with his past statements or not, this is a human story. It's a reminder of how quickly things can change, and how important it is to cherish the time we have.
I honestly don't know what to say. It leaves me with so many questions. What will become of his work? Will he find some peace? How does one even begin to process something like this?
It’s a sobering reminder to appreciate life, to tell those you love that you love them, and to make the most of every moment. Maybe that's the takeaway here.
