A former actress from The Mandalorian, Gina Carano, can continue with part of her lawsuit against Disney and Lucasfilm, a report by The New York Times shows but this is really not my last word on the subject.

Background

The hit Disney+ show had Gina Carano's character faced backlash for social media posts and ultimately led to her termination from the show in 2021. She contends that her termination was the result of her political views and is alleging not only discrimination but wrongful termination.

Lawsuit

Carano's lawsuit is alleging that Disney and Lucasfilm have violated her rights under California labor laws along with discrimination based a on political views. The lawsuit argues that the posts were simply personal opinions and "conduct protected under expressive provisions of speech."

In the lawsuit, Carano also notes what she claims is a "double standard" of discipline because of various actors of under Disney and Lucasfilm, have made publicly controversial comments without much or any repercussion.

Disney Settlement Statement

In a joint announcement Thursday, Disney and Lucasfilm said:

“The Walt Disney Company and Lucasfilm are pleased to announce that we have reached an agreement with Gina Carano to resolve the issues in her pending lawsuit against the companies. Ms. Carano was always well respected by her directors, co-stars, and staff, and she worked hard to perfect her craft while treating her colleagues with kindness and respect. With this lawsuit concluded, we look forward to identifying opportunities to work together with Ms. Carano in the near future.”

Gina Carano’s Response

Carano called the resolution “the best outcome for all parties involved”, adding:

"I hope this brings some healing to the force."
"I want to extend my deepest most heartfelt gratitude to Elon Musk, a man I’ve never met, who did this Good Samaritan deed for me in funding my lawsuit."
"Thank you Mr. Musk and X for backing my case and asking for nothing in return."
"To my lawyers… thank you for your wisdom and guidance."
"I am humbled and grateful to God for His love and grace in this outcome."
"I’m excited to flip the page and move onto the next chapter. My desires remain in the arts, which is where I hope you will join me."

Latest Court Development

The judge's recent ruling dismissed some some claims, but permitted Carano's wrongful termination claim to move forward, so the case can be in the evidence-gathering stage now where both parties can present documents, witness statements, and other proof in support of their positions.

Public & Industry Reaction

Carano's firing has been a polarizing subject with some fans arguing that Carano's social media posts were inappropriate, while others see her as a victim of political bias in Hollywood.

A user @ShawnCT_ on twitter wrote:

"Looks like Gina just turned the tables on Disney...."

With the lawsuit partially surviving the dismissal stage, the case could lead to a settlement, a full trial, or further legal motions. Disney and Lucasfilm have yet to issue a fresh statement following the ruling.
