Donald Macdonald, an Australian actor and one of the original presenters of Play School, died aged 86. The news was confirmed by entertainment reporter Craig Bennett, who said Macdonald died peacefully after a long battle with cancer.

Macdonald was a familiar face on television in Australia for years. He was one of the original presenters of Play School, presenting the early years of the children’s show from 1966 to 1969. He had an easy and friendly manner with screens over a long period that won many families, and especially young children, to the show, and different generations of parents and children well called 'Will be back' of the ABC.

That was only part of his career because MacDonald was well known in Australia in the theatre, television and film industries, with respect and admiration across the industry.

Following his departure from Play School Macdonald participated in several of Australia’s most popular television dramas including The Box, Certain Women, Cop Shop, Skyways, A Country Practice and most recently, the ABC drama Rake.

His film credits included the 1973 cult comedy Alvin Purple and a brief role in the Hollywood blockbuster Superman Returns.

Macdonald also had a strong theatrical presence in Australia. Not only was he an actor, he was also a playwright. One of his biggest successes was Caravan, which was popular in Australia and made its London stage debut.

Macdonald received an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) in 1991 for his work in the creative arts. He was awarded the Companion of the Order of Australia (AC) in 2006, which is one of Australia’s highest awards. These awards marked the recognition of his lead in the Creative Industries and as chair of the Australian Opera.

Macdonald died surrounded by family, including his cousins Paula Duncan and Amelia Barrett. Bennett said he was still very optimistic and friendly during his time in hospital and even enjoyed champagne and dessert while in the hospital with family.

His death has inspired an outpouring of condolences from fans and colleagues, many of whom called him warm, funny, and generous. Those who worked with him in theatre and television remember, perhaps more than his contribution to entertainment, how kind and professional he was.

Macdonald’s death ends a significant and distinguished career. He leaves behind a multi-generational legacy, on and off of children's television, and in numerous theatre and screen productions.
