Ewan McGregor admits he was embarrassed by his swearing in front of celebrity chef Delia Smith while recording a podcast. Speaking on the Dish from Waitrose podcast, McGregor explained that because he respected Smith so much, he got flustered upon meeting her and cussed a lot.
He said he was "so excited" to meet her, he accidentally swore "four or five times," when speaking to Smith. “I really let myself down… there was quite a lot of f***ing," he said. McGregor stressed that he did not intend to offend Smith when he was talking, but he was embarrassed, saying it was wrong to use bad language in front of the "established" cook.
Smith, who is well-known for her cooking shows on TV and her cookbooks, was a guest on the show, and McGregor said his nervous excitement took over. "It was one of those instances where I kept saying things that I just shouldn't have been saying," he said.
Podcast co-host Nick Grimshaw quickly put the actor at ease, joking that Delia Smith isn't afraid of a bit of swearing. "She's down the football all the time - she's heard worse!" Grimshaw said that Smith probably did not have an issue with the swearing.
The clip exists online because it includes a very human and relatable side of McGregor. He is, of course, a world-famous movie star. However, it shows that when it comes to meeting someone that you fan-girl or fan-boy over, even the best of us can regrettably make the same small mistake of swearing.
A Fun instance that Showcased McGregor’s Human Side
The tale arose while McGregor was chatting with Grimshaw and chef Angela Hartnett on the Dish from Waitrose podcast. He was joined by his long time wonderful friend and fellow adventurer Charley Boorman and they will appear in some travel documentaries together.
The episode was around McGregor and Boorman’s present project Long Way Home, a new travel series where they travelled from Scotland to England through the Arctic Circle. Although the series will have its dramatic and majestic content quite apart from the very amusing anecdote McGregor shared about Delia Smith!

What made the moment resonate was it showed the actor being so down to earth. McGregor did not make any excuses about what happened, he simply acknowledged that he felt a bit uncomfortable with his own behavior - not because he was called out, but because he wanted to be respectful to a person he admired.
There’s not often this kind of vulnerability in celebrity interviews, which resonated with listeners and readers alike. McGregor's candidness made what could have been an embarrassing moment in an interview into a fun story; a moment that mattered.
The incident has since been reported on by various UK media outlets such as Daily Record, STV and Cotswold Journal. This confirms that this story is new and fresh. The podcast episode aired in late June 2025 and is available now online.
