The popular sci-fi series Murderbot is officially coming back for a second season, as confirmed by Apple TV+ just before the Season 1 finale.
The streaming platform announced the renewal of Murderbot, its well-received science fiction drama, just one day before the final episode of Season 1 aired. The series, based on Martha Wells’ award-winning Murderbot Diaries books, stars Alexander Skarsgård as the voice of a rogue android who calls itself "Murderbot."
Apple’s decision to greenlight a second season reflects both the strong fan response and growing demand for thoughtful, character-driven science fiction. According to Matt Cherniss, Apple TV’s head of programming, the team is “thrilled” to continue exploring the unique world created by Wells, which blends action, emotion, and existential questions through the eyes of a security unit that has hacked its own governing protocols.
What Season 2 Will Focus On and Why It’s a Big Shift from Season 1
While the first season closely followed Wells’ debut novella All Systems Red, Season 2 is expected to shift gears and tackle the next phase of Murderbot’s journey. Reports suggest that the storyline will adapt material from Artificial Condition and beyond, including references to the in-universe soap opera The Rise and Fall of Sanctuary Moon, which plays a symbolic role in the original books.
This upcoming season is likely to challenge both the character and the show’s creators. Season 1 followed a tight narrative focused on Murderbot's relationships with a group of human scientists. But by the end of that arc, Murderbot leaves that group behind to pursue its own path. This opens up Season 2 to introduce new settings, unfamiliar characters, and deeper themes of autonomy and identity.
Executive producers Chris and Paul Weitz, who developed the series and co-wrote it with Wells, acknowledged the challenge of reinventing the narrative with a new supporting cast. However, they also expressed excitement about the opportunity to expand Murderbot’s world. They emphasized that the show’s unique balance of dry humor, emotional weight, and sci-fi action would continue in the next chapter.

Alexander Skarsgård, who voices Murderbot and also serves as executive producer, is set to return for Season 2. He received praise for bringing a complex blend of sarcasm and soul to the role, helping viewers connect with a character that isn’t even human.
Although Apple has not announced a release date for Season 2, production is expected to begin later this year. If the schedule follows the pace of the first season, fans may see the next installment sometime in late 2026.
