Who Is Hardeep Singh Kohli and What’s Happened?

A well-known person from BBC’s ‘Loose Ends’ and ‘Question Time’ Hardeep Singh Kohli appeared at Glasgow Sheriff Court last Friday where he pleaded not guilty to six charges raised against him from the period between 2007 and 2016.  

The locations on record where the alleged assaults occurred include BBC’s Pacific Quay studios, the Radisson Hotel in Glasgow, Cross Keys Hotel in Dumfries and Galloway, and the Yes Bar in Glasgow. Hardeep Singh Kohli is facing serious charges that include breaches of the peace, indecent assaults, and a sex act.  

As of now, the court has set the case for a trial in November where it intends to present evidence from seven civilian witnesses and one police officer.  

What is Being Alleged Explained 

The allegations in the charges are Kohli’s actions during the specified time. These actions, as alleged, fall under:  

• BBC Pacific Quay (2007-2008): Kohli is said to have attempted a hug on a woman as well as touch her bottom.  
• Radisson Hotel (Glasgow): Claims made that he stroked a woman’s back as well as poorly placed hair during that time.  
• Cross Keys Hotel (Canonbie): Disgraceful charges including the grabbing of a second woman’s arm by lurching toward her, attempting to kiss her, and committing a sex act.
• Yes Bar (Glasgow, December 2016): Allegedly charged with grabbing a third female individual and attempting to insert his tongue into her mouth.   

In relation to one of the charges, specifically the one connected to the Cross Keys Hotel, there is a submission of a consented defense which was mentioned during the hearing.

When’s the Hardeep Singh Kohli Trial and What Will Happen?

Sheriff John McCormick set the date for the trial to commence on the 24th of November, with an estimation of five days. During the session, the court had granted vulnerable witness directives for all three complainants, which indicated a consideration of their safety and well-being.  

Dressed in a purple turban and black and grey Adidas tracksuit, Kohli was once more granted bail after court proceedings.

In such deeply troubling allegations, a person you may have once shared a laugh with in a radio or TV show is suddenly transformed. It fundamentally changes the comforting sentiment we had because a cherished figure in the public consciousness is brought to such serious and distressing legal charges. It feels painful to grapple with the possibility of the allegations being true—but the legal steps taken indicate the accusations are not being made lightly.

The emtional weight is palpable: As with any allegations of this nature, public abuse of trust, and so much more, is leveled at professionals towering over the social push and pull. In fact, to people of certain generational cohorts, these figures carry heavy emotional weight of having watched them for years.
