The Wizarding World is back in the spotlight. HBO's highly-anticipated brand new Harry Potter television series is now officially in production, while the original films are returning to theaters.
A New Generation of Wizards
Filming is has commenced this summer at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden (where the last eight films were filmed). The series will adapt the seven books by J.K. Rowling into longer form television, with the first season set to premiere (tentatively) in 2027.
The young lead roles have been recast, replacing the original actors. Dominic McLaughlin will portray Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout Ron Weasley. The project will include some familiar faces, as Nick Frost will be portraying Hagrid; John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore; Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape; and Janet McTeer as Professor McGonagall. There are some casting announcements for the Weasley family but some key roles have yet to be announced including the Malfoy Family.
Classic Films Back in Theaters
In addition to the fresh production, Warner Bros. is celebrating its annual ‘Back to Hogwarts’ celebration with the return of all eight Harry Potter films to select cinemas. Additionally, it is the 20th anniversary of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire which likely increases the effect of nostalgia for longtime fans.
One of the coolest parts about the screenings, is the range of attendees for all these locations. The screens draw in people of all ages, with many adults who grew up with the franchise now taking their children to see the films in theaters.
Harry Potter Filming Moves Into London
Following studio work at Leavesden, crews have been seen filming at location in London. One suburban street is acting as Privet Drive, the childhood home of Harry Potter.
The production has garnered interest from local residents. Some have enjoyed the excitement, while others have expressed concern over crowding and increased traffic due to fans invading the neighbourhood.
No Reunion Film for the Original Cast
Although there have been rumors about a reunion project with the original film cast, director Chris Columbus has stated that it's not currently in development. Because of differences regarding author J.K. Rowling’s public views, it seems unlikely a reunion film would be made now.
What’s Ahead
With even more casting announcements to come in the coming weeks, including one dearly anticipated with the Malfoys and other major Hogwarts characters, things continue to move forward in the reboot, while also keeping the movies in the cultural conversation with the theatrical re-release, nearly 25 years since the first movie came out, Harry Potter's magic is still very potent for viewers around the globe.
