Henry Golding has previously said that a Crazy Rich Asians show is on the horizon and may even be around as early as 2026. He said this news during a recent visit to Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, noting that it is “aiming for like first quarter” of broad release that year.
While we certainly don't have full details of the show, this news does stoke the cultural excitement surrounding the Crazy Rich Asians film release back in 2018. The romantic comedy changed the industry and became a box-office hit, showcasing the lives of an upper-class Chinese-American professor who found out her boyfriend was from one of the wealthiest family in Singapore.
Its future show will presumably be a continuation of the film universe, we do not know if it will just be focused on the continuation of the same story, or if it would focus on new characters.
The series will be released on Max (formerly HBO Max), and it is being produced by several members of the original Crazy Rich Asians creative team. Adele Lim, who co-wrote the film, is serving as the showrunner, and Jon M. Chu, who directed the movie in 2018, is onboard as an executive producer.
Golding, who starred as leading man Nick Young in the movie, told host Andy Cohen that, while he hasn't read the script yet, he's heard some good things about where they are in the process. "I hear they're hanging around," he said. "I hear it's promising."
Even though Golding has announced that the series is going ahead, there is not yet any confirmation of who will be in the cast. We don't know yet whether stars from the first film, such as Constance Wu, Gemma Chan, Awkwafina, or Michelle Yeoh, will return in their original roles. There has been no news about casting or a confirmed storyline from the studio.
At this stage, here is everything we know:
- The series is in early stages of development.
- Production is for Max, formerly HBO Max.
- Adele Lim is the showrunner.
- Jon M. Chu is executive producer again.
- No casting has been confirmed.
- Projected release date is early 2026, depending on production timetable.
Until the series is actually in production, the timelines indicate viewers could probably see it premiere sometime in 2026 (likely in the first quarter of the year) if it continues on it's schedule and development maintains its course.
The Crazy Rich Asians film had a successful launch in 2018 earning more than $238 million dollars worldwide and generating accolades for its all-Asian cast and its role in Asian representation in Hollywood. A sequel developed prior to COVID-19, but for many reasons, it recently has developed little momentum. But this new series may be a new way to carry the story forward and bring familiar characters back to viewers.
