What Is Charcot-Marie-Tooth Disease?
Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT) is a genetic nerve disorder that affects communication between the brain, spinal cord, and limbs. It leads to muscle weakness, loss of sensation in hands and feet, and difficulties with balance and coordination. According to the Mayo Clinic, there is currently no cure, but treatments like physical therapy and orthopedic support can help manage symptoms.
CMT affects about 1 in 2,500 people worldwide. While some live relatively normal lives, others face severe mobility challenges. The disease is caused by mutations in key nerve-related genes, such as PMP22 and MFN2.
