Jack Shepherd, a longtime British actor best known for his portrayal of Detective Superintendent Charles Wycliffe in the hugely popular ITV television series, has died at the age of 85. Following an illness, Shepherd died peacefully at a hospital with his family members present.
Jack Shepherd: A Legendary TV Detective
In Leeds, England, Jack Shepherd has created quite an impression with his role as the sharp and calm Detective Charles Wycliffe in the 1990s crime drama series Wycliffe, based on W.J. Burley’s novels. From 1993 through 1998, this show made Jack a very popular actor, due to his elegance, calm demeanor, and methodical thinking.

In addition to Wycliffe, Shepherd was known as Bill Brand, the rebellious Labour MP in the 1970s, for which he received a BAFTA nomination, and the Olivier Award for Best Actor 1983 for his stage performance in Glengarry Glen Ross. The agency who represented Jack, Markham, Froggatt and Irwin commented, “It was an honour to share a part of Jack’s wonderful life, and his passing affects us all greatly.” He is survived by his wife Ann Scott and their five children, Jan, Jake, Victoria, Catherine and Ben.
