Jana Kramer, a country singer, and actress is discussing some of the hard choices she has made as a parent, and also taking on work that she admits does not sync up with her beliefs. In a recent interview, Kramer confessed that due to financial pressures, she took on jobs she looks back on with varying feelings of regret. Regrettable because they weren’t good choices for her kids, and she made choices to support them after her divorce from former NFL player Mike Caussin.
Kramer was totally zen when she said, "There are certain jobs I've taken that challenged my moral compass." In that same vein, she referenced being part of a commercial for a product that she does not feel good promoting, and while she didn’t elaborate on this instance, you could tell it was still something she felt was a poor choice at that time. She went as far as to say when she signed on to do the work, she had no other choice.
"You have to make your child support payment," Kramer said, when asked to explain why she accepted certain gigs that she may otherwise have turned down. "It was a nice check, and I took it."
Parenting After Divorce And Finding New Love Fast Forward
Kramer and Mike Caussin's divorce was finalized in 2021 after nearly seven years of marriage, and they are co-parenting their children, daughter Jolie and son Jace. In 2023, Kramer had a third child, son Roman, with her current husband Allan Russell, a former soccer coach.
Kramer stated that her experiences with her parents' divorce as a teenager ultimately shaped how she parented her kids. She recounted hearing her parents argue in their home, and promised herself that she would never have those experiences in her children's lives, and that she would raise them in a healthier and more emotionally stable environment.
Kramer stated that while she is thankful to be in a better financial situation today, she learned a great deal about the sacrifices that come from being a single parent. She explained that while she would not make the same choices, her first priority was providing for her children.
Kramer said she is in a completely different place today. She married Russell in 2024 in a small, intimate ceremony in Scotland, and described their marriage as incredibly nurturing and down to earth. Kramer noted they both make a point to try to carve out crew time to play tennis or take walks with their families with the objective of staying connected.
Kramer stated she also has been modeling healthy relationships for her kids. She said that while she is very happy with her new family life, she can also be very intentional about her boundaries - especially with her husband.
“We don't let the kids in the bed,” she said, indicating that little things like that help to protect their couple time.
As she continues to build her life post-divorce, Kramer hopes to teach her children what it really means to be resilient and honest. She has talked about what has happened to her before, and the good that has come from it, but for her, it is all about letting her children know that when life gets hard, you have the ability to move forward with strength.
Jana Kramer provides a mindful reminder to everyone about the roller coaster and complexities that parenthood involves, especially for parents doing it themselves. Her ability to speak freely about the choices she has made adds a personal humanity to the idea of divorce, financially struggling, and falling in love again.
