Singing sensation Justin Timberlake has disclosed that he has been diagnosed with Lyme disease, revealing the physical and mental strain it has caused him during his “Forget Tomorrow World Tour.” The singer and actor made the announcement on July 31 and had recently completed the last segment of the Turkey tour.

Timberlake broke the news on his personal Instagram page. He mentioned the symptoms he had while on tour, but he didn’t know the cause. Timberlakes’ symptoms of fatigue, nerve pain, and exhaustion became his constant companions. He later was diagnosed with Lyme disease, which he was unaware of at the start. Lyme disease is caused by the bacterium which is transmitted through tick bites.

Timberlake managed to push through his sets, even if he struggled at times. He recalls at some point wanting to cancel shows, but his love for music and his fanbase ultimately prevailed. He explains, “I was dealing with symptoms I couldn’t explain.” In hindsight, he reflects, “But performing brings me so much joy, and I’m glad I didn’t stop.”

With his recent diagnosis, he explained he hopes people will understand the situation he was attempting to navigate following the public speculation regarding his on-stage energy and his overall appearance.

Lyme Disease Can Be Misunderstood and Often Goes Undiagnosed

Lyme disease is caused by an infected tick bite and symptoms range widely. In addition to fever, headache, fatigue, and skin rash, these symptoms often include a rash. Left untreated, the infection may advance to the joints, heart, and nervous system. Timberlake didn’t say when he was bitten, but he did confirm the disease was undiagnosed for a while.

Despite the perception that this illness is common only among hikers and campers, it has been on the rise in the US and Europe for the past few years. Approximately 500,000 people in the US are diagnosed and treated for Lyme disease every year.

Receiving a diagnosis, Timberlake now realizes, is doubly comforting. It accounts for a lot of the physical problems he has been dealing with. He also went on to thank his wife, actress Jessica Biel, and children, stating that their support during what he calls ‘a tough time’ has been invaluable.

He joins the likes of Justin Bieber, Avril Lavigne, and Shania Twain, some of the more prominent names who have publicly acknowledged Lyme disease. With their struggles, they shine a light on a disease that tends to get ignored or incorrectly diagnosed.

Raising Awareness and Looking Ahead

Timberlake is, through his statements, working towards making Lyme disease and living with invisible illnesses more known, especially their everyday impact. People are responding publicly. Many, taking to social media, have expressed their support and appreciation for Timberlake.

While he chose not to discuss specifics of his treatment, Timberlake mentioned he is concentrating on recovery while managing his overall wellness. Lyme disease is generally treated with antibiotics, and the sooner the treatment is started, the better the chances of recovery. However, in some instances, symptoms can persist for months, or even years.

Timberlake's break allows him to rest and heal. The conversation he’s started takes part in a larger discussion about information disclosure by public figures. It also underscores the reality that even in the limelight, self-care, both of the body and mind, is often neglected.
