The newest expansion to the Bosch television universe, Ballard--is currently streaming on Prime Video. The series premiered on July 9, 2025, with all ten episodes releasing in one batch.
The show stars Maggie Q as LAPD Detective Renée Ballard, a dedicated officer in the department's cold case unit.
Ballard has all the familiar elements of the Bosch series, including a guest appearance from Titus Welliver, who reprised the role of Harry Bosch. Set in Los Angles, the series focuses on Ballard's attempts to solve cold case crimes, which occur within the LAPD without acknowledgment as to how internal circumstances appear to provably undermine the departments necessary efforts.
The series is based on various characters from author Michael Connelly's bestselling novels, and exposure of the challenges trapped in the working conditions sometimes common within a beleaguered & dysfunctional police department facing shifts in society, and for whatever causative reasons, were sometimes evidently falling short before the public.
Fans can anticipate visits from gripping investigations, infused with emotional moments, and scene-setting walking us through the many facets of what is notoriously difficult, modern policing entails.
Early reviews of the show have been favorable with positive comments about the writing, both the realism within the writer's treatment of the factual cases, and Maggie Q's stalwart performance.
Shielding the steps forward in the process of character development, Connelly's inspiration for the character of Renée Ballard is said to be drawn from real-life detective Mitzi Roberts, who subsequently lends some degree of authenticity to the program elements examined in Box's portrayal of detective work.

Maggie Q Leads a Gritty Crime Drama with Real-World Depth
In Ballard, Maggie Q portrays a smart and tough detective who is dedicated to solving cases from long ago to find justice for victims. The series will explore complicated cases including a John Doe investigation and investigation into a serial killer. At the same time, Ballard will face political challenges internally in the department putting even more pressure on her already difficult job.
The series presents a grounded, and realistic portrayal of how cold cases are explored in the present-day police force. With limited resources and a small team, Ballard navigates volunteer labor and retired officers to turn evidence into answers as families wait.
Critics and audiences have responded favorably to Ballard's fresh approach to the Bosch franchise and offering the entire season at once allows the audience to watch the story unfold from beginning to end. As of yet, Amazon has not made an announcement as to whether a second season will follow, but the early interest seems promising.
The show continues Prime Video's commitment of quality crime dramas, and Ballard should have no problem attracting existing Bosch fans or new audiences that would appreciate a realistic and character-driven story.
