Mark Hamill has officially left his most well-known character behind—Luke Skywalker. Recently, Hamill made it clear in an interview that he has no plans to return to the world of Star Wars.

He stated that he hasn’t been approached regarding returning and believes that the character story was told completely. He stated- "I think with the
growth of new characters we should let the saga be its own thing and explore fresh stories".

Hamill first played Luke in 1977 in Star Wars: A New Hope and then continued to return for some of the sequels and WW1 of the newer films. While he values the appreciation that fans have shown him and the legacy that the films have had, he understands that there comes a time to not hold onto the past. He does not want to hold on to a character that he played a long time ago.

He is looking for something that is new and is impactful, and something that he has to engage with more as an actor.

Shifting to drama, voice work, and award recognition

Mark Hamill is now taking on different kinds of roles that include dramatic roles and voice work. He recently starred in The Life of Chuck, based on a Stephen King story. In the film, he plays a grandfather dealing with a role that is more emotional and realistic than his previous work.

This film was released in June 2025 and it received great reviews with many remarks about Hamill's character providing depth and warmth to the character.

Hamills is still doing voice work as well. He is in The King of Kings, an animated film that came out in April that shares the story of Jesus.

The entire film features a bunch of actors who are recognizable like Kenneth Branagh and Oscar Isaac!

Hamill also won this year the Cinema Icon Award at CinemaCon 2025. The award recognized Hamill for his long entertainment career curriculum - spanning Star Wars and his recognizable voice work as the voice of the Joker. While he may be finished appearing in the galaxy far, far away, Hamill is still making waves throughout the industria.
