Orlando Bloom's Unexpected Comedy Turn
Okay, so you know Orlando Bloom? Legolas, Will Turner – the whole shebang. Well, get this: he’s just completely surprised everyone by starring in a hilarious new action-comedy called Deep Cover, and I had to share!
From Swords to Slapstick: Bloom's New Role
This isn't your typical Orlando Bloom fare. Forget the dramatic sword fights; this time, he's trading elves and pirates for improvised gangster impersonations. Alongside Bryce Dallas Howard and Nick Mohammed, Bloom makes up a trio of improv actors recruited by the police to infiltrate London’s criminal underworld.
Improvising Their Way Through London
Imagine the pressure! They had to stay in character, using their improv skills to navigate genuinely dangerous situations. I read that the director, Tom Kingsley, raved about how well the three leads transformed into their roles, and honestly, that sounds intense. The film premiered at SXSW London and it sounds like a total blast. The whole thing is a mix of edge-of-your-seat suspense and laugh-out-loud comedy. And it's all thanks to some seriously committed acting!
- Deep Cover is directed by Tom Kingsley, the guy behind Stath Lets Flats.
- Produced by Colin Trevorrow (yes, that Colin Trevorrow, from Jurassic World fame).
- It premieres on Prime Video June 12th.
It’s been described as a surprisingly unique project, based on an original concept from 2010! Apparently, it started as a comedy, then it got bigger and bigger as more stars joined. I'm intrigued by the whole backstory.
Bloom's Unexpected Journey to Comedy
Interestingly, Bloom himself admitted in a recent interview with L'Officiel that he wasn’t initially drawn to comedy. This feels like a real departure for him. He mentioned that the supportive writing and direction really helped him find the humor in his character, which is really cool to hear. He even talked about his initial hesitation about another iconic role...
The Pirates of the Caribbean Almost Wasn't
Remember Will Turner? Well, Bloom almost didn't play him! In that same interview, he revealed he was hesitant to sign on to Pirates of the Caribbean because it was based on a theme park ride – "This is crazy?", he reportedly said when he first heard about it. It was only after Geoffrey Rush, his co-star in Ned Kelly, convinced him to do it that Bloom took the role. Now that is a story!
- Rush's encouragement led to Bloom's career defining role.
- Rush jokingly claims Bloom "owes him 10 percent" of his success from the franchise.
So, there you have it. Orlando Bloom, proving he can handle more than just epic battles and swashbuckling adventures. Deep Cover sounds like a wild ride, and I can't wait to see it. Let me know what you think once you've watched it!
