The eagerly-awaited Peacemaker Season 3 is not officially confirmed, and the future of the series is now uncertain. Series co-creator James Gunn has suggested that the story could continue — but perhaps not in a straightforward third season. In the post-finale podcast, Gunn even said of the Season 2 finale, "maybe the final episode of Peacemaker really." But he also made it clear that the character won't just disappear - some of these characters will appear in the DC Universe in a different way.
Why Peacemaker Season 3 Isn’t Confirmed
Unclear Renewal Status
Despite strong fan interest, HBO Max has neither renewed nor canceled Peacemaker Season 3.
When asked about it, Gunn responded:
"You will find out more in episode 8. But does that mean a third season? Not necessarily. Some of these characters will continue, but it's not exactly Peacemaker 3."
This suggests the continuation might shift to a spin-off, mini-series, or integration into another DC project.
Finale Sets The Stage For Change
The finale of Season 2, which is named “Full Nelson”, concludes with Peacemaker’s apprehension and banishment to the prison planet Salvation — a final cliffhanger moment that is more like a branching point than reset. Instead of the conclusion suggesting a direct Season 3, it could be a launchpad for related stories in the DCU - arcing out of these storylines, the Checkmate organization or Salvation Run arcs for example.
Focus Shifting to DCU Universe Building
It seems that Gunn is focusing on intertwining Peacemaker’s characters into the and broader DC Universe (DCU). He may have other projects such as Waller, Man of Tomorrow and Lanterns which incorporate part or whole aspects or characters from Peacemaker series if he doesn’t continue with it.
What Peacemaker Season 2 Did — & Why It Matters
To understand where we’re headed, let’s recap key elements of Season 2:
- The series features alternate dimensions, multiverse adventures, Rick Flag Sr. using the Quantum Unfolding Chamber (QUC) and more.
- Eventually, Peacemaker finds himself on the prison planet Salvation, where he is the only known prisoner and possibly the root of conflict.
- The group also forms a new agency called Checkmate, teasing a deeper connection with DC Comics lore.
- While discussing the future of the series, Gunn and actor Freddie Stroma specifically discussed the representation and psychological depth of the character Vigilante (Adrian Chase).
Season 2 leaves multiple avenues open for the series to continue to exist as opposed to typical endings to shows. It sets us up nicely, whether Peacemaker 3 happens, or spin-offs and cross overs with the DCU, or other initiatives with properties.
James Gunn says he has no plans to make ‘PEACEMAKER’ Season 3.

What Could Replace Peacemaker Season 3?
Here are plausible next steps for the Peacemaker characters and narrative:
-
Checkmate TV Series / Spin-Off
Checkmate is a covert DC organization tied to various heroes and villains. Gunn has hinted this may be the better vehicle for continuing the story.
-
Salvation Run / Prison Planet Miniseries
Given Peacemaker is stranded on Salvation, a dedicated series set on that world — introducing new prisoners, battles, and escapes — is a strong possibility.
-
Integration into DCU Films / Shows
Expect characters or plot threads from Peacemaker to cross into upcoming DCU projects. Gunn has suggested they’ll reappear “in not too long” in some form.
-
One-Off Specials or Anthology Episodes
A limited-run special or anthology episode(s) might be used to resolve the cliffhanger or revisit favorite arcs without a full season renewal.
