Magic: The Gathering has announced a collaboration with Sonic the Hedgehog as part of its upcoming Secret Lair taco cart collection. Dubbed The Sonic Superdrop, the collection will go live on July 14, 2025 at 9:00 a.m.

PT on the official Secret Lair website. The crossover includes a combination of new cards and reprints, all ties directly into characters and themes from the Sonic franchise.

The Superdrop will consist of three themed sets:

Friends & Foes – seven new legendary cards featuring Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy, Shadow, Dr. Eggman, and a “Super State” card.

Chasing Adventure – a reprint set of well-known spells (like Sol Ring and Fabricate) but in new art styled like Sonic.

Turbo Gear – Specific artifact card reprints (like Lightning Greaves and Swiftfoot Boots), in new art styled in a Sonic themed way.

Each set will be available in both a non-foil ($29.99) and foil version ($39.99). Only the Friends & Foes set will be produced for physical game stores starting on August 21, the others will be strictly available for online sales, so keep that in mind.

Because the cards are able to be played in both Commander and Legacy formats, there is something for everyone, both players and collectors alike.

Unique Cards, Artwork, and Store Release Details

This is one of those few crossovers Magic has produced which features not just visual reprints but mechanically new cards. The characters are given new abilities in-game which allows players to use the characters in official play.

The conversations around how cards will impact deck-building strategies in communities such as Commander with cards like "Super State" or "Shadow," have begun.

Wizards of the Coast confirmed that Friends & Foes will come out through WPN (Wizards Play Network) retailers. Retailers can place orders beginning July 1, with a launch date of August 21.

The other two bundles, Chasing Adventure and Turbo Gear, will not be sold through retailers.

Community feedback has been largely positive. Fans appreciate the detail in the art and thought behind the new cards. Many players feel the drop hits a good balance between nostalgia and playability.

As well, with the popularity of other themed releases such as those of Final Fantasy and Lord of the Rings, the Sonic Superdrop continues Magic’s momentum of bringing pop culture into card game space.
