Netflix Confirms Stranger Things Season 5 Trailer and Release Dates
Netflix has formally revealed the Stranger Things Season 5 trailer release date as July 16, 2025, just one day before the show's ninth anniversary and sure to aggravate many fans eager to witness the conclusion of the phenomenon.
Season 5 will conclude the story viewers embarked on in 2016. Season 5 of Stranger Things will take place in the fall of 1987, about one year after Season 4. Hawkins Indiana, has been subjected to military quarantine due to the consequences of the Upside Down. The core characters are predominantly scattered, but focused on one mission: finding Vecna, who disappeared following the battle at the end of Season 4.
Netflix has also put together a complete schedule for the new season. Instead of dropping all episodes at once (as has often been the case for Netflix and series of similar stature) the new edition will come out in 3 parts:
- Volume 1 (Episodes 1-4): November 26, 2025
- Volume 2 (Episodes 5-7): December 25, 2025
- Finale (Episode 8): December 31, 2025
Every released part of the show will be available at 5:00 p.m. PST on the respective release date. This strategy mimics the recent structure Netflix has used for some of their higher-profile titles, wanting to stretch out viewership and conversations and to build momentum over a few weeks instead of dropping the entire season at once.
Presently, there are no formal episode titles or even trailer footage available. It seems that the next trailer will provide the first real insight into where this story is heading and how impactful the characters revealed will be for this final showdown.
Nostalgic Flashbacks, Real Sets, and No AI
The creators have assured audiences that the cast members have not been digitally de-aged, despite how long it has been since Season 4 was released. In the fifth season, eyes will feature flashbacks from the characters earlier years, with the now older teenage actors by using makeup and lighting. It has been suggested that the fifth season will feature moments from the characters past, such as Castle Byers and other familiar Hawkins locations.
This season also required new filming locations and sets to be built including:
- A fully constructed downtown Hawkins, under military quarantine
- A recreation of Hawkins High School
- A fictional radio station (WSQK), which served as a way of establishing the group, and subsequent communications
- Underground tunnels that are a part of the expansion of the Upside Down
Vecna's physical look will remain practical and heavily prosthetic, preferring lengthy, intricate applications instead of CGI. Jamie Campbell Bower again returns in full Vecna garb and reports indicate that transforming Bower into Vecna took over 7 hours each time.
A table read previously shown behind the scenes supposedly made much of the cast cry. Filming some farewell scenes was specifically hard for David Harbour and Finn Wolfhard, with Finn hinting that he filmed one of the final scenes which means Mike lives until the end.
New Cast Member, Spin-Off Projects Expand the Stranger Things Universe
In additionally denoting the wrap up of the series, Netflix has also given information on the rest of the Stranger Things universe. The most significant casting announcement for Season 5 is the addition of Linda Hamilton from The Terminator films. The creators have yet to share her character information but the announcement is a big name for the last leg of the series.
The Duffer Brothers have also been working on a number of expansion projects. One of the announced expansion projects is a Storybook animated spin-off series called Stranger Things: Tales From '85. The series is expected to premiere in 2026 and is described as being set between Seasons 2 and 3 with similar characters experiencing peril from the Upside Down.
Additionally, a stage play entitled Stranger Things: The First Shadow has found success in London's West End and recently opened on Broadway. The play is a prequel to the series, and discusses life's early days in Hawkins and the origin of Vecna. Netflix made a documentary on the making of the stage play earlier this year.
Fans of the series can expect this to represent the franchise's future beyond the one story they regarded as important, even as the original series is now finished. With multiple spin offs and theatrical adaptations being worked on, Stranger Things is establishing itself as a brand, continually relevant and a part of Netflix for the foreseeable future.
What to Expect From the Final Season
Although the key details of the plot remain under wraps, there are a few themes expected in Season 5:
- The final confrontation with Vecna, who is still alive and getting ready for its final attack.
- Hawkins under siege, in lockdown, and heavily militarized.
- Character arcs coming full circle, in particular Eleven, Hopper and Mike.
- A deeper experience with the Upside Down with additional creatures and locations.
The show's creators have utilized both "epic and grounded" to defined the final season and we can expect moments between the characters that span emotional, character moments propped up by large action set pieces. As is the norm, every episode will be longer than before, and all will be closer to the time of a feature film.
Now, only a couple of months removes us from the first trailer, as the clock is quickly approaching. Expect a slew of teasers, cast interviews, etc. and early cuts of the show to appear in late July of 2025.
