DC Studios has announced that they will be releasing the Supergirl movie in theaters on June 26, 2026. The film will focus on Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El, aka Supergirl. Alcock portrayed Supergirl briefly in the upcoming Superman movie scheduled to be released in 2025, meaning her inclusion in the film before her full debut in this solo film.
The film will be directed by Craig Gillespie (Cruella and I, Tonya) and will be based on the Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comic but will be titled just Supergirl. The film will take a darker approach to Supergirl, showing a version of Kara who is raised on a destroyed piece of Krypton.
Superman's upbringing on Earth made the character less emotionally complex than Supergirl, who has faced loss and hardship from the beginning.
The film is a part of DC's new cinematic plan, called "Chapter One: Gods and Monsters." This will connect future DC characters through a shared universe—the journey will start with Superman in 2025 and will continue with Supergirl the following year.

Cast, Plot Details, and Superman Connection Revealed
The movie will build on Kara's story after her cameo in Superman where she enters the Fortress of Solitude to collect Krypto, Superman's super-powered dog. This moment is a way for audiences to meet the character before her feature film.
Supergirl will introduce a few new characters:
Matthias Schoenaerts as Krem of the Yellow Hills (the villain)
Eve Ridley as Ruthye Marye Knoll
Jason Momoa (yes, the same one) will reprise his role as Lobo, whose anti-hero persona is popular with fans.
David Krumholtz and Emily Beecham will represent Kara's parents Zor-El and Alura In-Ze
Supergirl has finished filming already. Production completed in the UK, Iceland, and Scotland, and is now in post-production. Supergirl's director Craig Gillespie and DC Studios have promised that the VFX work is of high standard, and the film will feature a strong character-driven story.
This Supergirl is designed to differentiate itself from endless portrayals we've seen in other forms and offer a different take, one that is more serious and personally emotional than before. The film will cover Kara's journey of discovering identity, justice, and meaning, while still tying into the larger narrative of the DC Universe.
