The cast have offered their support for filmmaker James Gunn, who is facing scrutiny over Superman ahead of its July 11th release.

After telling his audience he wants to utilize an immigrant-themed story about a hero who wants to do good in a divided world, some members of the media criticized the content as "too woke," spawning online commentary and exporting Superman's themes into public debate about the messaging of the movie.

It didn't take long for members of the cast to offer their own rebuttals to the comments. For example, actor Nathan Fillion, who plays Green Lantern and previously starred in the Gunn-directed movie Slither, took to social media in a humorous manner not lost on superhero fans.

Sean Gunn, the director's brother, noted that Superman's message of inclusion and empathy is one of the things that make Superman such a timeless character.

While it is unknown if there is concern in his camp, early reactions to Superman, that have become public from those who have screened the film, discuss a powerful emotional tone and grounded storytelling.

There are also many positive praises directed at Gunn's attempt to ground Superman and to create a hero that brings hope, integrity, and compassion forward in an increasingly complex and divided world. The film will also be the beginning of Gunn's new vision for DC Studios under the banner of "Chapter One: Gods and Monsters."

Premiere Marks a New Beginning for the Superman Franchise

The world premiere of the film took place on July 7 at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles, where cast and crew were in attendance.

David Corenswet, who plays Superman in the new film, was joined by wife Julia Best Warner on the red carpet for their first public appearance since marrying in 2023 and upon welcoming their first child earlier in the year.

Corenswet stars as Superman in this new era of DC Universe storytelling. He is joined in the film by Rachel Brosnahan (Lois Lane), Nicholas Hoult (Lex Luthor), Isabela Merced (Hawkgirl), and Nathan Fillion (Green Lantern).

These actors comprise the center of a retooled, diverse DC Universe that James Gunn and DC Studios are looking to marry with a new generation of fans.

So far, the reception from critics and comics fans alike has been predominantly positive. Initial assessments from industry insiders call the film "hopeful," "fresh," and those reporting on the film have noted its emotional core with nods toward the legacy of Superman.

The film mixes classic storytelling elements combined with a modern sensibility to reframe what Superman looks like in 2025 and beyond.
