Hulu has started working on The Testaments, which is basically a follow-up to The Handmaid’s Tale and continues the story from where that show left off. It’s based on Margaret Atwood’s book that came out back in 2019. They actually started filming in April 2025, in Toronto. What’s interesting is that even though the book jumps 15 years ahead, the show picks up only about four years after The Handmaid’s Tale ends. It’s not exactly sticking to the timeline from the novel, but honestly, that makes sense for TV.
Now, the story is mainly going to follow three women: Aunt Lydia (yes, she’s back), Agnes (she’s actually June’s daughter, Hannah, all grown up), and Daisy (who we know as Nichole). Bruce Miller, who created the original show, is back at the helm for this one too. And Elisabeth Moss is also involved, but only behind the scenes this time—at least that’s all we know for now. Whether she’ll show up onscreen again is still a bit of a mystery.
As far as the cast goes, we’re seeing some new faces along with familiar ones. Ann Dowd is returning as Aunt Lydia, and she’s honestly such a strong part of the story that it wouldn’t feel the same without her. Agnes is going to be played by Chase Infiniti, and Lucy Halliday is taking on the role of Daisy. There’s also Rowan Blanchard playing a character named Shunammite—she’s like one of those privileged teens living in Gilead. Other names attached include Mabel Li, Amy Seimetz, Brad Alexander, and a few others who’ll be filling out the world around them.
What’s the Show Actually About?
The whole idea behind The Testaments is to take us deeper into the messed-up world of Gilead—but this time, it’s from the point of view of a new generation. Agnes has grown up in Gilead, so she’s kind of been raised in all of its strict rules and crazy control. But she starts questioning all of it. Like, she starts seeing the cracks in everything she was taught.
Then there’s Daisy, who’s been living outside Gilead, in Canada. She ends up finding out about her real identity and how she’s connected to this whole thing, and that basically pulls her into this bigger fight against Gilead. Aunt Lydia, of course, is still deeply involved and plays a huge role in how everything unfolds. Her character has always been complicated—she’s part of the system but also kinda works against it in her own way. So we’ll definitely see more of that tension.
From what we know, the show will touch on a lot of themes—resistance, identity, power, and how people try to take it back. It feels like it’s going to be more personal and emotional than even The Handmaid’s Tale was, especially since we’re watching these young women step into their roles in this dangerous world.
When’s It Coming Out?
There’s no official release date yet, which is kind of frustrating if you’re already excited about it. But since filming started in April 2025, it’s probably safe to assume we won’t see it until sometime in 2026—maybe even early 2027 if things get delayed. And honestly, with how big this show is going to be, they’re probably going to take their time to get everything just right.
Until then, all we can do is wait for more updates. If you’re really into it, keeping an eye on Hulu’s socials or any interviews from the cast is probably your best bet. The hype’s building slowly, but this one feels like it could be worth it.
