Uncharted Now Streaming on Prime Video: Tom Holland's Hit Returns

Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg’s Action Film Rises in Popularity

Uncharted, the 2022 action-adventure film adapted from the popular video game series, is now available to stream on Prime Video! Starring Tom Holland as young treasure hunter, Nathan Drake, and Mark Wahlberg as his mentor, Victor "Sully" Sullivan, the film became one of the most-watched titles streamable on the platform upon its release on July 15.

Uncharted follows Drake and Sully as they search for a centuries-old treasure, revealing secrets and dangers along the way. Directed by Ruben Fleischer, Uncharted captures the excitement of ancient histories and globe-trotting adventures seen in franchises like Indiana Jones and National Treasure.

While some critics felt mixed on the film- it has a 41% rating on Rotten Tomatoes- general audiences were on the movie's side, with many noting how entertaining the film was and the good chemistry between Holland and Wahlberg. Uncharted grossed over $400 million worldwide making it one of the more successful video game adaptations of recent years. 

Now that Uncharted is available through a major streaming platform, more viewers are checking out the film who may have missed its theatrical run. With an output of action, humor, and mystery, Uncharted offers something for fans of all ages.

Why Uncharted Is Getting Noticed Again

The film's recent resurgence on Prime Video can be attributed to a number of key points. First, Tom Holland is still one of the most hotly demanded actors in Hollywood, and let's be real, after the successes from the Spider-Man films, who wouldn't be entertained by that casting? So, we can absolutely build an audience on the knowledge that Holland, himself, puts butts in seats.

Second, there has been a resurgence for action-adventure films on streaming. Understandably, meaning many of us look for a "quick hit" action-adventure. With a straightforward story and attention-grabbing scenes, films like Uncharted do have exciting scenes, meaning a sizeable audience wants to gravitate to films just like it.

Finally, the film will include aspects to not only fans of the Uncharted video game franchise who are coming back, but newly interested viewers—not fans, who are watching for the first time. The film has many of the same elements from the games, including, ancient puzzles, maps, and benefits from poignant high-stakes chases, meaning both could enjoy.

Sony has announced that a sequel to Uncharted is finally in the works — the script has reportedly been written and filming has yet to begin. This announcement has helped regenerate interest by fans in the original movie as they look forward to what comes next in the franchise. 

With a solid box office result, and even some new momentum from the streaming service, Uncharted is providing evidence that games films can do well, not just at the cinema!

Strong Performance in Non-English Markets

One area often ignored is Uncharted’s rising popularity in international, non-English-speaking regions thanks to being on Prime Video. The theatrical focus was on U.S. and European box office performance, but reports indicate a recent surge in viewing in Latin America, Southeast Asia, and areas of the Middle East, where dubbed or subtitled versions are becoming popular .

This may inform how Sony approaches international marketing plans for Uncharted 2 or conceivably lead to regional adaptations or original spin-off titles.
