The recent upgrade to The Income Tax Department’s E-Filing Portal has brought new and improved options for taxpayers that will greatly benefit them. Now taxpayers can simply submit an online rectification request through the e-filing portal, which enables taxpayers to easily rectify any mistakes or errors found on their ITR.

Now that we have established what this new feature is and how it will work, let us discuss how it impacts taxpayers as well As what taxpayers should know going forward in order for this new online rectification process to be done correctly so that taxpayers can avoid potential mistakes while filing for their rectification request.

What Does This Update Mean for Taxpayers?

For years, taxpayers have struggled with rectifying errors in their filed returns. Whether it’s missing income details, wrong calculations, or errors in tax credits, the process of correcting these mistakes used to be time-consuming and complicated. However, this new update makes the process much simpler.

  1. Faster Rectification:
The new feature eliminates the need for taxpayers to manually fill out forms and submit paper applications. Now, taxpayers can request rectification directly through the e-filing portal, saving time and reducing errors caused by manual processing.

  2. Increased Transparency:
By enabling online rectification requests, the portal gives taxpayers better visibility into the status of their corrections. Users will be notified of the status and any further steps required, making it easier to track and manage their cases.

  3. Error Reduction:
One of the most common frustrations with ITR filing is the chance of small errors leading to delays in refunds or even penalties. With this update, taxpayers can quickly correct any mistakes, ensuring that their returns are processed more smoothly and refunds are not delayed.

  4. Accessibility for All Taxpayers:
While previously these rectification requests could be difficult for non-technical users to navigate, the updated portal is designed to be more user-friendly, catering to taxpayers from all backgrounds. This makes it especially useful for those who may not have access to professional tax services.

Before the implementation of the rectification feature, taxpayers often faced long wait times while waiting for refunds due to an error on their return. However, these long waits are now over as the error will be corrected within days of being requested to be rectified. Taxpayers who have previously waited for long periods of time will now be able to receive a faster resolution.

In addition, since taxpayers can now rectify errors in a more timely and efficient manner, they will have an improved ability to ensure that their returns are accurate and in compliance with tax laws, so taxpayers can avoid penalties for filing an inaccurate return. This capability will be invaluable for income tax returns that must be processed by December 31, 2025.

How to Use the New Rectification Feature on the ITR E-Filing Portal

The new rectification feature is simple to use. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you navigate the process:

Access the Portal

Log in to the e-Filing portal at https://www.incometax.gov.in/iec/foportal using your PAN, password, and e-Verification method. From the dashboard, go to Services > Rectification and click New Request.

Select Request Type

Choose Income Tax (or Wealth Tax for limited AYs), enter the Assessment Year, and pick from options like Reprocess the Return (for processing errors), Tax Credit Mismatch Correction (for TDS/advance tax issues), or Return Data Correction (offline XML/JSON upload or online edits). Note limitations: no new deductions, income sources, or exemptions allowed; changes cannot alter gross income significantly.

Provide Details and Submit

For data correction (offline), select reasons and schedules, upload XML/JSON (max 5MB), and add donation/capital gains if needed. For online correction, edit schedules directly; for tax mismatch, update TDS/TCS challan details. Preview, e-verify using EVC/OTP/DSC, and submit—you'll get a 15-digit reference number via email/SMS.

Track Status

Check progress under Services > Rectification Status; processing takes time, and prior requests must complete before new ones. A recent update (Dec 2025) allows direct rectification for TP/DRP/Revision Orders via Request to AO seeking rectification. If rejected or time-barred (beyond 4 years), file with Jurisdictional AO using attachments (PDF, 5MB max)
