Apple has started pre-orders for its next-generation iPhones - iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, and the brand new iPhone Air. Pre-orders began September 12, 2025, and will be officially available in stores on September 19, according to AppleInsider.
However, the real star of the show is the iPhone Air. Claiming to be the thinnest iPhone to date at 5.6 mm, weighing 165 grams, with a 6.5-inch OLED display (120Hz refresh rate), it comes with an A19 Pro chip. Despite its slim design, Apple's promise of performance on par with its Pro models.
The other iPhone 17 models were also improved - better displays, stronger building materials for the build, quicker chips for performance, better camera systems. The base iPhone 17 starts at US $799, and the iPhone Air starts at US $999.
What Buyers Should Know & Offers Available
Preorders are up and running through Apple’s online store. In many regions, just moments before the preorder went live, the website went offline temporarily - this is typical for the website when adding new products.
A few important things to remember, if you’re interested:
- The Pro models - 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max - will likely sell out quickly, particularly early on in the preorder timeframe.
- If you order a base iPhone 17 or a new iPhone Air shortly, delivery will be on launch date: September 19.
- Wireless carriers are also offering values - up to US $1,100 off in some situations - if you preorder under their terms (trade-in, contract, etc).

What This Means Going Forward
With preorders live, Apple is evidently positioning the iPhone Air as a premium slate focused ultimately on design and portability with little compromise in power. For the design-conscious consumer who wants a small form factor and high-end specs, it might be especially attractive.

Simultaneously, it's likely demand for the Pro versions will remain robust, given their more advanced camera systems and feature sets. Carriers are offering trade-in agreements and credit incentives to ease the upgrading process in many markets.
