Sony has officially revealed Ghost of Yōtei, the highly anticipated follow-up to Ghost of Tsushima, during its recent State of Play showcase. The new game is being developed once again by Sucker Punch Productions and will launch exclusively on PlayStation 5 on October 2, 2025. Set in 1603 in Japan’s northern region of Ezo (now Hokkaido), the game introduces a brand-new main character and several bold new features that aim to offer a fresh yet familiar experience.
A New Hero, New World, and a Different Way to Play
In Ghost of Yōtei, players take on the role of Atsu, a lone warrior on a mission to hunt down a ruthless group known as the Yōtei Six. The story is set centuries after the events of Ghost of Tsushima and shifts the action from Tsushima Island to the snowy, mountainous landscapes of Hokkaido.
Unlike traditional mission structures, the game focuses on player-driven exploration. There’s no main questline marked on your map—instead, players collect clues from defeated enemies to track their next target. This open-world design encourages curiosity and rewards exploration.
Combat in Ghost of Yōtei is intense and versatile. Atsu carries an impressive arsenal, including dual katanas, a large ōdachi sword, a kusarigama (chain weapon), bows, and rifles. The game allows players to switch between stealth and direct combat seamlessly, depending on the situation.
Atsu also has a wolf companion who plays an important role in exploration and combat. Together, they traverse dense forests, snowy mountain paths, and villages filled with secrets waiting to be uncovered.
To give players more creative control over the game’s look and feel, Ghost of Yōtei offers three unique visual modes:
-
Kurosawa Mode: A return of the fan-favorite black-and-white filter with Japanese dialogue, paying tribute to classic samurai films.
-
Takashi Miike Mode: A gritty and raw presentation style, emphasizing brutal, close-quarters combat.
-
Watanabe Mode: A relaxed, lo-fi mode that replaces combat music with chilled beats, ideal for slow exploration.
These director-themed filters not only change the visual atmosphere but also subtly adjust how the game is experienced emotionally and tonally.
Special Edition PS5 Consoles Inspired by Japanese Art
Alongside the game, Sony has announced two limited-edition PS5 console bundles inspired by traditional Japanese art. These are designed to reflect themes from the game and offer players a stylish way to mark the release.
-
Gold Edition Console – Features a design inspired by kintsugi, the Japanese art of repairing pottery with gold. It symbolizes Atsu’s personal journey of recovery and resilience.
-
Black Edition Console – Available exclusively through PlayStation Direct, this version is influenced by sumi-e, a style of ink painting. It reflects the game’s moody, artistic tone and minimalist elegance.
Both bundles come with a uniquely designed PS5 console (with disc drive), a matching DualSense controller showing Atsu’s silhouette, and a digital copy of Ghost of Yōtei. Players will also receive extra in-game items like a special mask and a set of PSN avatars representing Atsu and the Yōtei Six.
For those who already own a PS5, Sony will also sell the custom console covers and controllers separately, making it easy to personalize your setup without buying a full bundle.
With its blend of artistic presentation, non-linear gameplay, and emotional storytelling, Ghost of Yōtei is shaping up to be one of the most visually and thematically ambitious titles on the PS5. More details are expected in the coming weeks as the October release approaches.
