If you've ever imagined a fully electric Bronco rumbling (well, quietly rolling) through American cities, get ready. Ford just announced a giant new Bronco EV and plug-in hybrid, but it's only for China. The new Bronco, which is called Bronco New Energy, maintains the tough off-road look but is now electrified for modernity. Unfortunately, American fans will have to look at it from afar (for now).

And yes—it still has the full-size spare tire on the back like the Bronco we love!

Two Power Options That Actually Make Sense

Unlike many EVs that lock you into a single powertrain, Ford allows Chinese buyers to choose between:

Fully Electric Model:

  • 105 kWh battery
  • 271 horsepower
  • Roughly 404 miles of range (rated in China’s CLTC)

Plug-in Hybrid / EREV Model:

  • 1.5L turbo engine + 44 kWh battery
  • 241 horsepower
  • 137 miles of EV-only range
  • 758 total miles of range (with gas)

Why this matters: Whether you are a city dweller or an avid long-distance commuter, you can choose the configuration that best fits your lifestyle—without compromising power or range.

Packed With Tech, Including Lidar

Now we're getting into the future. The Bronco New Energy has roof mounted Lidar, the stuff typically only seen in high-end, fully autonomous vehicles. That means you'll experience better driver assistance, smarter obstacles, and much more comfort.

A few other very cool items include:

  • Adaptive LED headlights
  • A full digital dashboard
  • Presumably a Level 2 or higher driving assist system

Imagine a world where you're fighting stop and go, and you are driving a Bronco that assists you in scanning the road ahead like a $5 Million high-end robot with wheels.

Big, Bold, and Bronco-Looking

While this variant has some generational lines with the Bronco Sport, it's much larger, and much more rugged. With a 116 inch wheelbase and weighing nearly 5800 pounds it's truly a heavyweight. There is a recognized off-road lifestyle for this vehicle, characterized by the upright panes, bulky shape and side-opening tailgate (though it may primarily be designed for an urban family/ weekend warrior customer in China).

Visual Cues You Will Recognize:

  • Round headlight assemblies
  • Chunky bumpers
  •  Full-size rear spare mount
  •  Bronco-branded grille

It's definetly an SUV capable of adventure or camping, or even just showcasing in your driveway.

Why Only China?

Why only China? This aggressive new machine was built through a collaboration between Ford and Jiangling Motors, a company with whom Ford shares a joint venture. China's EV market is emerging, and the trend is travelers enjoying larger vehicles with plenty of tech, as well as range. The Bronco New Energy provides all those characteristics.

But, the U.S.? No official word yet—but if there is sufficient fan interest, who knows?

Conclusion

While the Bronco New Energy may be limited to China for now, it sends a clear signal about where Ford is headed—a future of an electrified, tech-forward SUV. With its bold looks, impressive range and advanced features such as Lidar, this is more than just a regional release; it is perhaps a glimpse at what might be coming to other markets should demand warrant it. For now, U.S. fans can only watch from afar—but if this electric Bronco makes enough noise, it is possible Ford could bring something similar here sooner than later.

FAQ

Not currently, but a market for the Bronco EV could lead to that.

The EV version offers 271 horsepower via a 105 kWh battery.

The hybrid has up to a 137 miles electric range with gas backup gives a total of up to 758 miles.

It has Lidar-based driver assist technology that would likely cover any advanced semi-autonomous features.

It's larger, all electric or hybrid only, and has some technology like Lidar that is not present in the U.S. Bronco.

Possible. Ford is looking at EV options across the lineup and watching the market respond.

Details are vague, but it likely accepts the fastest charging available at a modern Chinese EV.

China is the largest marketplace for EVs, and Ford's joint-venture there allows  local production.
