Harley-Davidson is recalling more than 82,000 Softail motorcycles due to a fault in the rear suspension system that could lead to tire damage and increase the risk of accidents.

The issue comes from a metal tab that holds the rear shock preload adjuster in place. According to the company, this tab can break while riding, which may cause the adjuster to rub against the rear tire. Over time, this could lead to the tire losing air suddenly — a serious safety concern.

Although no injuries or crashes have been reported so far, Harley-Davidson is taking steps to prevent potential accidents.\

The company discovered the problem during internal checks, including a review of earlier warranty claims and feedback from dealers.

The recall affects certain Softail models built between 2018 and 2024, including:

  • FLDE (2018–2019)

  • FLHC (2018–2021)

  • FLHCS and FLHCS ANV (2018–2024)

  • FXLRS and FXLRST (2020–2024)

  • FXRST (2022)

In total, 82,117 motorcycles are affected by the recall. Harley-Davidson confirmed that the 2025 Softail models already come with upgraded parts and are not included in this safety issue.

Free Repairs to Start as Recall Notices Go Out

Harley-Davidson began alerting its dealers about the recall on June 6, 2025. The company plans to start sending recall letters to motorcycle owners beginning the week of June 16.

Affected owners will be able to bring their bikes to a certified Harley-Davidson dealer for a free repair.

The solution involves installing an updated bracket and hardware designed to keep the preload adjuster from shifting and touching the tire. These parts are meant to provide better stability and reduce the risk of tire contact.

Owners can find out if their motorcycle is included by entering their VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) on either Harley-Davidson’s recall website or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recall lookup tool.

In the meantime, riders are encouraged to watch for warning signs such as:

  • Unusual sounds under the seat

  • Rear tire wear or visible damage

  • Movement of the shock adjuster when the seat is lifted

If any of these signs appear, Harley-Davidson recommends avoiding use of the motorcycle until it can be checked by a dealer.

The company says this action reflects its ongoing commitment to rider safety and product reliability. Owners are urged to respond quickly once they receive their recall letter to avoid any risk on the road.
