Polestar 7 EV SUV is coming in 2028, built in Europe—not China—alongside a new Volvo, offering U.S. buyers lower costs and tax credit eligibility.

Polestar has just released a teaser for its next massive electric SUV, the Polestar 7 — and it's already generated plenty of hype amongst EV fans. What's so great about this one? For one, it won't be designated as made in China as the other models were. It will be built in a new Volvo factory located in Slovakia, alongside a new Volvo EV model yet to be revealed.

This all says a lot about Polestar's expanding ambitions, especially as they prepare to take on Tesla, Rivian and other prominent EV competitors in the U.S.

A New Chapter for Polestar

The Polestar 7 is predicted to be a compact EV SUV - think just a little smaller than the Polestar 3, but still premium and sporty. We do not have the design in full view yet, but the teaser suggests a strong, upright SUV stance with Polestar's characteristic lighting and clean Scandinavian styling.

What's the significance?

  • Refined Swedish styling with performance technology DNA
  • Positioned against Tesla Model Y and Rivian R2
  • First Polestar to be produced in Europe versus Asia

This is not just another new SUV - it marks a shift into a more available, tariff-friendly future for Polestar fans in the U.S.

Made in Europe to Dodge Import Fees

Up until now, all Polestar products have been manufactured in China, and China is under siege in both the U.S. and Europe with enormous import duties on EVs. Polestar's response to this challenge?  Move all production to a factory owned by Volvo in Košice in Slovakia.

Why this is important:

  • Evades 100%+ U.S. tariff on Chinese EVs
  • Decreases shipping costs and carbon footprint
  • Increases eligibility for U.S. EV tax credits under IRA legislation

Thus, for U.S. purchasers, this could equate to lower pricing and shorter ship times when the Polestar 7 launches.

Co-Developing a Secret Volvo EV

The Polestar 7 will not be going it alone! It is being developed alongside a new Volvo SUV - probably the new-gen EX60, which sources say launches in 2027. Both vehicles will be based on the SPA3 platform, which is Volvo's next-gen EV architecture which aims for:

  • Better integration of the battery pack (most likely with a cell-to-body design)
  • Better range / energy efficiency
  • Better safety and driver assist systems

So even though they will share a lot under the skin, you should expect the Polestar 7 to be sportier in its drive with, of course, a cleaner and minimalist interior layout.

Expected Timeline for the U.S. Launch

Here's what the timeline looks like:

  • The first expected volume Volvo EV starts production in early 2027.
  • The second expected volume Polestar 7 starts production in 2028, with more details to come in late 2027.

U.S. availability is hopefully going to be very soon after the global launch, especially since production is located closer to Western markets. That's great news for buyers who have been waiting for Polestar to meaningfully scale and go more mainstream.

The Advantage for U.S. EV Customers

This is exciting stuff for U.S. drivers. Polestar has already developed quite a fanbase in the U.S., but price and availability had always been an issue. With Polestar 7, built in Europe and with a more global presence, it could finally be different.

  • You got Volvo-level safety in a premium vehicle.
  • Performance that has the Polestar engineers tuning for performance.
  • Maybe more affordable with tax credits.
  • Maybe reduced delivery time outsourcing manufacturing outside of China.

Conclusion

In the months and years to come, the Polestar 7 is already shaping up to be one of the most exciting electric SUVs to monitor. With production officially moving to Europe, advanced technology under the hood from Volvo, and a launch timeline of 2028, this EV has global square footage in mind, specifically the U.S. area.

If you have been a Polestar enthusiast for a long time or even if you just love high-tech, stylishly designed electric SUVs, the Polestar 7 captures an exciting mix of design, tech, and utility that may really shake up the EV space. The icing on the cake? If U.S. buyers finally had some affordably priced, easily accessible representation in Polestar 7. 2028 cannot come soon enough!

Keep watching—it's worth a mention.

FAQ

The Polestar 7 is an upcoming compact electric SUV scheduled for the year 2028, with a sleek design, modern Volvo technology, and a sense of fun in the driving experience.

We expect distribution for the U.S. to begin sometime in 2028 after its global debut and start of production in Slovakia.

The 7 will be manufactured in Košice, Slovakia at a new Volvo factory that also produces a competing new Volvo Electric SUV.

We expect it to ride on the next generation SPA3 platform that will also be used on other new Volvo electric vehicles such as the rumored EX60.

Because it is not being made in China, and if it meets battery sourcing requirements, it is possible it could qualify under IRA guidelines for federal EV tax credits.

While they will share technology, the Polestar 7 will be more performance oriented with a minimalist feel while the EX60 will be more focused on family luxury.

It is likely the Tesla Model Y, Rivian's R2, Ford's forthcoming next gen EVs and potentially Lucid's compact SUV too.

There are no numbers yet, but changes from SPA3 platform indicates longer range and charging ability than current Polestar models.
