If you're eyeing a mid-size SUV but didn’t want diesel, there’s good news: Tata Harrier and Tata Safari — the two flagship SUVs from Tata Motors — are finally getting a petrol version. After years of being diesel-only, the company is adding a turbo-petrol option on 9 December 2025.

What’s new under the hood

The big newcomer is a brand-new 1.5-litre turbocharged direct-injection petrol engine (from Tata’s “Hyperion” family) — the same engine that was first shown at the Auto Expo 2023.

Expected output? Around 170 horsepower and 280 Nm of torque — giving the Harrier and Safari petrol versions a solid punch in the mid-size SUV segment.

The engine will likely come with both manual and automatic gearbox options. This gives buyers flexibility depending on whether they prefer city-driving convenience or manual control.

What remains same — and what you already love

The petrol versions are expected to keep most of the existing design and feature set of the diesel Harrier and Safari.

So think of: roomy interiors, strong safety features, and that SUV-style ride comfort. The change is under the hood — making them more accessible for those who prefer petrol over diesel.

Also, the diesel versions continue to run on the trusty 2.0-litre Kryotec engine, producing 168 bhp and 350 Nm torque.

Final Thoughts

While the petrol engine adds flexibility, actual fuel efficiency, running cost, and real-world refinement in Indian driving conditions will matter a lot. Since the engine is new to Harrier/Safari, buyers should check how it performs on highways as well as city traffic. Also, the exact prices and variant-wise features are yet to be fully released by Tata — waiting for that will help in making a better comparison for prospective buyers.
