The Volkswagen Virtus, a high-end midsize sedan known for its German construction, contemporary features, and overall excellent safety record, has suddenly become much easier to purchase in India. A substantial change to GST implications, put in place by the central government in September 2025, has established a flat tax structure of 40% for all midsize sedans, the previous tax structure being 45% plus additional offspring cess. Price has dropped significantly for all Virtus versions, making them easier to buy, while also making competition in the segment fierce again.

Volkswagen Virtus New GST Price: Impact on Market and Rivals
With this price drop through the GST price change, Volkswagen Virtus becomes a more competitive option compared to rivals Honda City, Hyundai Verna, and Skoda Slavia that previously enjoyed only a slight price advantage over the Virtus including a price advantage on higher spec models that may have been outside of the budget of several buyers. This price drop will draw more buyers to the Virtus, allowing for slightly better sales and market share as buyers can afford models above the entry level. We also expect Honda, Hyundai, and others to follow suit with similar price offerings into the market which would generate bigger price drops throughout the segment.
A relative of mine saw my Volkswagen Virtus for the first time. He really liked the car, but when I told him it only had a 1.0 liter engine, he was left in shock and disbelief.

Conclusion
This GST price drop for the Volkswagen Virtus is a big win for mid-size sedan buyers in India. Not only are the prices cut, but so is the price of value as essential features are pushed down from the top spec ranking. Therefore, the Virtus now poses a better buy when combined with its successful German engineering and safety regulation implementation at truly affordable prices. So, this price drop serves to ease the ownership in a more premium vehicle segment still dominated by robust competition and buyers still wanting value for money.
