Cast And Characters: Who Returns And Who’s New?

Pennywise (Bill Skarsgård):

Bill Skarsgård steps back into the iconic role of Pennywise, a shape-shifting being that haunts Derry, bringing fear and panic. Pennywise is more than just a clown. It symbolizes our deepest fears and has the ability to transform into what will frighten and haunt its victims the most. In Welcome to Derry, Pennywise will create panic across both old and new characters, revealing a deeper mythology that is related to the very beginnings of Derry. Skarsgård's terrifying performance layers in the psychological terror as the series slowly unfolds what drives Pennywise and in turn, the some of the town's history.

IT:Welcome To Derry

Leroy Hanlon (Jovan Adepo)

Jovan Adepo adds layers to the character of Leroy Hanlon, a newly assigned Major with the United States Air Force, who arrives in Derry as a new addition. In fact, Leroy is also the grandfather to Mike Hanlon from the original "IT" story. His narrative arc shifts the story towards conversations around generational trauma and heritage, as Leroy and his family face increasingly impossible odds against supernatural evil. Leroy’s arc is guided by his heart and his desire to protect his loved ones while navigating the balance of military composure and personal emotion—something audiences have not seen presented in previous adaptations.

Charlotte Hanlon (Taylour Paige)

Charlotte Hanlon, portrayed by Taylour Paige, is Leroy's spouse and Mike's mother. As a champion for social justice and change, she is often front and center against the evil that has taken over Derry. Charlotte's public and private activism makes her one of the few constants with moral clarity in the series. Her increasing doubts that nothing is right in Derry compel her to search for the town's hidden truth, ultimately awakening her to the very nature of Pennywise.

IT: Welcome to Derry Episode 2

General Francis Shaw (James Remar)

General Shaw, played by James Remar, serves as Leroy's commanding officer at the base in Derry. Shaw's authority allows outside pressure to enter the story and necessitate difficult decisions as the world of military operations and the supernatural horror of the series collide. Remar's ability to portray complicated authority figures brings an edge of dramatic tension that lends itself to Shaw's critical role in the pending calamity.

Why IT:Welcome To Derry Episode 2 Is “Must-Watch”

Increasing Stakes And Atmosphere

  • The story ends with an unexpected slaughter of children/friends in the town of Derry, Maine, suggesting this will not take the “safe” option of the original story.
  • Episode 2 arrives just in time for Halloween and was released early in the U.S., implying that the producers perceive this as significant horror.
  • The series is leaning heavily into the dread of a town being haunted rather than just “kids vs. monster” - critics are picking up this tone.

Investigating The Origin And Reconstructing The Mythos

  • This show occurs in 1962, which is 27 years prior to the 2017 movie adaptation. This gives it the opportunity to explore the backstory of the creature, Pennywise, as well as the town itself.
  • While Pennywise may not fully, or at all, appear (whispers say he comes around episode 5), the show employs different horrifying forms and the dread of the unknown.
  • It sounds like Episode 2 is going to link up more: for example, there is reference to events that took place before in Derry (ie. the "Black Spot" from the trailers).

High Production Values And A Sense Of Nostalgia

  • Derry is being described as atmospheric and immersive in the early 1960s. The entire town, the clothing, the sense of crisis made the horror feel real.
  • The creators (Andy Muschietti & Barbara Muschietti) return from the films and bring a cinematic feel.

What To Watch For In Episode 2 (Without Full Spoilers)

  • Observe how the characters that have survived are affected: Two of the principal children who survived are highlighted in episode 1, which puts them in a unique situation going forward.
  • The rise of institutional or adult responses: The family that moves to Derry, the authorities of the town, the military (military base in Derry in this iteration) — how do these adults react (or not) to the supernatural?
  • The construction of mythology: References to events, breadcrumbs how the entity has become part of Derry’s history (racial tension, older tragedies, kinship).
  • Using fear as a weapon: The show explores that idea that the monster utilizes fear, division and secrets — season 2 is where to start to see those behaviors become clear.
  • Visual horror concepts: More of the body horror, weirdness (mutant babies, strange visions). Not just jump scares — the premiere established that format, and part 2 continues
