Matt Tebbutt Expected to Step In as New MasterChef Host
The BBC is said to be ready to appoint Matt Tebbutt as the new face and host of MasterChef following the departure of long-term presenters John Torode and Gregg Wallace . Insiders have suggested that Matt was the number one choice and talks have already begun to finalising the new line-up.
Producers view Tebbutt as a trusted and stable host to take MasterChef forward into its next chapter. Matt's experience on screen and popularity with viewers have made him the obvious choice to replace the long-standing hosts of the mainstream MasterChef brand and possibly Host of MasterChef: The Professionals.
It is thought that the BBC is also looking at Grace Dent and Andi Oliver to be companion competitors. Dent, who is currently in Celebrity MasterChef, could stay in this role. Oliver, who is most famous for hosting Great British Menu, is considered a strong option to take part in the new arrangement.
Filming for the next series has already been scheduled to take place later this year in Birmingham. The decision on what presenter will host is likely to happen in a few weeks.
Changes Follow Exit of Torode and Wallace Amid Controversy
The news of the search for new presenters comes after many ups and downs with the much-loved cooking competition. It was reported that John Torode was fired after he made inappropriate remarks on set. Gregg Wallace left after a separate misconduct investigation also involving the BBC.
The BBC has not publicly commented on the full details, but it has been made public by both presenters that they will not be returning. However, the broadcaster has had to act quickly to safeguard one of its long-running, and most successful food programmes.
Producers are said to be seeking presenters who are experienced in food and television, as well as someone who they believe can help restore viewers' faith. In this context, Matt Tebbutt is a safe and familiar choice. He has spent years fronting live cooking broadcasts, and has a huge food fan-following.
Though the new presenting team has not yet been announced, the people involved in the production of the show believe that the next phase of MasterChef is a fresh start, and they will be looking in a more modern and inclusive direction.
It is expected that the BBC will confirm the final presenters before the end of summer, and prior to launching the next season of the show. Until then, we wait and see who takes the lead in the kitchen.
