On Thursday, July 10, 2025, the next full moon--known as the Buck Moon--will occur. This term derives from Native American tradition, indicating the time of about a month when male deer (aka bucks) gain new, velvet-covered antlers.
The Buck Moon counts among the fullest and most beautiful bright full moons of the year, and has significance through culture and season, in many areas around the world.
The full moon will be at 4:37 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time (EDT), which is July 11, 2:07 a.m. Indian Standard Time (IST). Since this occurs in the daytime hours in many regions, especially India, the best way to view it will be after sunset on July 10.
This full moon in India is also Guru Purnima, a traditional festival commemorating spiritual or academic teachers. Many people gather to pay respects to and venerate their teacher, and view the full moon.
The moon will be visible all night, but it is suggested by some skywatching groups that skywatchers look east in the sky after sunset to enjoy this moon viewing experience.

Best Time and Places to View the July Full Moon
Those in the USA, UK, and India will be able to see the Buck Moon as it rises on July 10, likely in the early evening. When it rises, the Buck Moon will look disproportionately large and golden due to a natural phenomenon called "the moon illusion," where the moon appears larger near the horizon than when it is overhead.
To help you see the Buck Moon, here are some tips:
What time? Look after sunset on July 10
What direction? Look to the eastern sky
Where? Find an area where you can see to the horizon
Avoid bright light. Stay away from any significant degree of light pollution.
Simple gear is okay. A camera or binocular adjustor can enhance the experience.
The Buck Moon will be bright for everyone. In India, the best brightness is during the afternoon, but it will still look nice later in the evening. Regardless of whether you are watching together as part of the Guru Purnima celebration or by yourself, this full moon will be a great opportunity to experience nature and tradition.
