Ford Motor Company has reported a large recall affecting nearly 625,000 vehicles in the U.S. The recall is centered around defective seatbelts on the Ford Mustang, and defective rearview cameras on the F-250, F-350, and F-450 Super Duty trucks. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has indicated that both of the issues can increase the chance of a crash, and injury. Ford is working to fix both defects as they each prioritize public safety and state owners can repair them for free.
Ford Seatbelt Safety Issues: Mustangs Under Scrutiny
Ford is recalling more than 330,000 Ford Mustangs from the 2015-2017 model years, due to issues with the seatbelt performance. Ford concerns around the front seat belt anchor pretensioner cables corroding if exposed to water or road salt, thus affecting the cable and potentially breaking it. If the cable broke, the person would not be protected by the seatbelt in the event of a crash, increasing a serious injury.
Ford will inspect the seatbelts at the dealership and possibly replace the parts. Ford indicates that the dealership mechanic will also remove pieces of the carpeting that may interfere with the seat belt cable. Ford will then send a letter to notify the owner's at that point and direct them to schedule a time to repair the defect with their local dealer.
Ford Rearview Camera Display: Super Duty Trucks Affected
Approximately 292,000 Super Duty trucks including the F-250, F-350, and F-450 models from model years 2020-2022 are being recalled due to potential issues with their 360-degree rearview camera system. In some situations, which can occur based on external lighting factors, the rearview camera may not display an image, creating conditions where drivers may be unable to see behind them with respect to a driver's typical field of view in addition to increasing the potential for a crash.
Ford will conduct a software update of the image processing module to resolve the issue with functionality. Recall notification letters describing the recall and a free update will be sent starting October 20, 2023, and a permanent fix is expected by March 2026.
