Azealia Banks was born in Harlem, New York City on May 31, 1991. Longtime after the loss of her father at the young age 2 , she was raised solely by their mother. Banks entered several performing arts disciplines as an outlet for her creativity and later went onto to study at the LaGuardia High School of Performing Arts, known for producing many stars in the music and acting fields.

In her late teens, Banks began to post music to MySpace under the name "Miss Bank$," attracting producers and independent labels to her. Her time online was the beginning of her strange career in the music industry.

Breakthrough with “212” and Musical Innovation

In 2011, Banks released “212”, an incredible catchy and audacious song which took off and went viral almost instantly. “212” with its distinctive combination of electro house, hip hop, and irreverent lyrics reached the world very fast specifically to an audience in Europe. Here so Banks was captured and being elevated in a very busy landscape in hip hop to one of the new voices added.

Broke with Expensive Taste (2014), her debut release after eons of supposed releases that definitely did have a number of false starts, was highly original and distinguishable from anything else in the genre, and it is hard to imagine any of that is possible today, but of course with her representation she put serious time and effort into a fun album. With tracks like "Wallace," "Chasing Time," and "Ice Princess," it was easy to see her use of influence, originality, and make it concurrently be surprising and desirable to music lovers, establishing her cult following.

Versatility and Independent Work

At times under label constraints or friction with other professional forces, Banks created on her own terms. She put out mixtapes rightly highlighted by Fantasea (2012) and EPs like 1991, as further evidence production skill and her ability to mesh house beats with creative rap.

While she never physically went mainstream on her own, it was likely her reputation or her ability to take over creative control in delivering her work (directing her videos and their on-stage visuals) altered independent artists and fans' perceptions of her sound and style, if not in the short term, possibly in the long run.

Feuds, Controversies, and Online Backlash

Banks has often set aside her music career. Instead, she's frequently gotten involved in heated public debates and engaged in many highly publicized arguments with others. She has called out or feuded with:

  • Cardi B – for being unoriginal
  • Nicki Minaj – for allegedly manipulating the industry
  • Zayn Malik – which resulted in her getting suspended from Twitter for her offensive comments
  • Iggy Azalea – for cultural appropriation and pretending to be a real rapper

Most of these feuds took place online, most notably on Twitter, where Banks established herself as a person with unfiltered opinions. In the Twitterverse, Banks' statements generated discussions, where some people defended Banks' "keep-it-real" persona and others condemned her as toxic.

Beyond Music: Business Ideas and Personal Opinions

Outside of music, Banks has explored several ventures:

  • She created her own soap and skincare line named CheapyXO
  • She acted in independent films
  • She hosted podcast style rants about pop culture, race and politics

Her beliefs have attracted criticism and controversy, including comments on religion, vaccines, and cultural identity. But, she said, her intention is to expose double standards and say the things that most people are avoiding because they are uncomfortable.

Legacy and Current Presence

In the year 2025, Azeaelia Banks is still a controversial figure in pop culture. While she has slowed down significantly in terms of output with her music, she continues releasing singles, promoting new albums, and being active on social media platforms. She has a loyal fan base who celebrate her and refer to her as someone who will never compromise her voice or creativity.

While various things she has said have led to extreme public backlash, on the flip side she can sometimes be seen as having the qualities of a trailblazer who has always resisted being boxed in traditional ways. Whether she is discussed as a misunderstood artist or as a provocateur, Banks continues to broaden the spectrum—from a musical perspective and a cultural perspective.
