On December 29, 2025, CBSE informed schools about a revision in the 2026 board exam schedule. Only a limited number of papers have been rescheduled due to internal administrative adjustments, not because of festivals or weather conditions. The update affects lakhs of Class 10 and Class 12 students across India and gives them a little extra time to prepare. Revised admit cards will be issued soon. This article covers which CBSE exams were postponed, the updated exam dates, the reason behind the change, and important instructions for students and parents.
Why Were CBSE 2026 Exams Postponed?
Only for administrative reasons did CBSE postpone its board exams Class 10 and Class 12 that are scheduled to start on March 3, 2026. An official circular was released via Dr Sanyam Bhardwaj, the Controller of Examinations, on 29 December 2025 stating how this change was made in order to facilitate the management of examination arrangements. The purpose of the postponement is to allow for the distribution of question papers and the finalisation of examiner duties and for just over 26000 examination centres in India and abroad to coordinate, this will help with the smooth functioning of the examination process for students. CBSE stated that the postponement has nothing to do with the weather or any festival nor does it involve any other type of external factor. This decision will benefit around four million five hundred thousand students taking the examinations from a total of 204 different subjects.

CBSE Board Exams 2026: Important Guidelines
CBSE has issued a few key instructions along with the revised schedule:
- Make sure you get to your exam centre ahead of the time given on your admit card
- Follow every guideline for examinations on the day of your examination
- Bring your most up-to-date admission card and government-issued photo identification
- Do not believe anything you read on websites that has not been confirmed by official sources, or through your school.
- Schools must ensure that students are provided with guidance in this process and that there are no communication issues.
CBSE 2026 Exam Pattern Updates
CBSE has kept the 2026 board exam pattern student-friendly. For Class 10, around 50% of questions are competency-based, including case studies and MCQs, with more choices to reduce stress. Class 12 focuses on application-based and practical questions rather than memorisation. Projects and internal assessments in Science and Commerce carry up to 20% marks. The exam delay has not changed the syllabus or pattern. Students can download sample papers from the CBSE academic website to practice a mix of objective, short, and long-answer questions.
What Should Students Do Now?
CBSE has advised students to stay focused and continue their preparation as planned. Here are a few important steps students should follow:
- Check with your school: Schools have been officially informed and will update notice boards and student groups.
- Download the revised date sheet: Students should refer only to the updated schedule shared by CBSE or their schools.
- Adjust study plans wisely: Use the extra time to revise weak areas instead of delaying preparation.
- Do not rely on rumours: Trust only official updates from CBSE or school authorities.
Will There Be More Changes in CBSE 2026 Date Sheet?
As it stands today, CBSE has yet to communicate any further changes to the timetable. According to CBSE officials, the newly released dates are set in stone, barring any unexpected circumstances. CBSE strongly advises students to study for this new exam timetable, and do not expect any other delays in the examination process.
