Elon Musk has officially started a new political party, called the America Party, marking a major change in his role in U.S. politics. The news comes after Musk issued a statement that soon-to-be-passed bipartisan spending bill in Congress was, "irresponsible" and "debilitating" for the country’s financial future.
Musk does not anticipate that the America Party will have any interest in winning the presidency or function as a traditional third party. It is intended to be a source of leverage for only select congressional races.
Rather, it intends to support candidates who promote smaller government, less federal spending, and dedicated work by really innovative candidates.
While third parties have had little success in U.S. politics, Musk's notoriety and financial backing may provide some desired visibility.
Political experts note that even without wins, the party still influences the outcome because they may draw votes from close races in Republicans or Democrats.
The launch follows a poll Musk previously posted on Twitter, now X, that showed over 65% of responders suggested they supported the formation of a new political party. While the level of impact remains uncertain, the formation of Musk’s American Party adds an additional factor to consider as voters get closer to the 2026 midterm elections.
Now a direct challenge to Trump! 🚨

Trump’s Harsh Response Signals GOP Division
Donald Trump has publicly pushed back against Musk's new political direction. The ex-president called the America Party a bad idea and warned that he may consider taking away federal contracts for the Musk companies including SpaceX.
This suggests mounting tensions among conservatives, pulling apart Trump's followers, moderates, and a new generation of leaders represented by Musk.
Some Republican strategists are concerned that Musk's involvement could create a split vote on the right and hurt Republicans in closely contested districts. Others believe the America Party could draw disillusioned voters from both sides of the aisle.
Although Musk has not announced any plans to run for any office, this new entry into politics could still change how campaigns are funded, promoted, and covered.
Democratic leaders are also taking notice. DNC Chair Ken Martin said that this new party should be taken seriously and implied that it could have power - even without winning - and affect the balance of power in Congress.
As the 2026 elections approach, both sides are waiting to see if Musk's new project will take hold or go away like so many third parties before it.
